Adriana Evans, born as Adriana Madera, is an American R&B vocalist and was among the pioneers of the late-'90s and early-2000s neo-soul movement. She was born 1974 in San Francisco, CA, the only child of jazz recording artist Mary Stallings, who sang with Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie. Evans' godfather is jazz saxophonist and former John Coltrane band partner Pharoah Sanders. This childhood immersion in jazz was always apparent in Evans' later recordings. At the age of 18 she moved to Los Angeles, where she met rapper Dred Scott. Her friendship with Scott grew into a musical relationship. In 1993 this led to her appearance on Scott's single "Check the Vibe" off his Breakin' Combs LP. In 1995, the two wrote and recorded her pioneering self-titled debut album on Capitol Records. Changes at Capitol landed Adriana and her debut record on RCA/Loud Records and it was officially released in 1997. The album featured Scott's hip-hop-centric production backing Evans' jazz-influenced vocals -- combined with live instrumentation, it was a significant departure from the R&B of the day. It was more of a critical and cult success, reaching only the number 33 position on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Its two singles, "Love Is All Around" and "Seeing Is Believing," charted, with the former reaching number 65 on the R&B charts and the latter reaching number 50. Following the release of her debut record, Adriana became disillusioned with the music industry and took refuge in Brazil, and didn't record a follow-up until 2004's Nomadic, an album that dabbled in various genres, held together by a theme of what she described as "African music." The next year she released Kismet. In 2007 Evans released El Camino, an album that seems, more so than her previous records, more heavily influenced by her stay in Brazil. Evans' fifth LP, Walking with the Night, was released in 2010; "Weatherman" was the album's first single. ~ Vincent Thomas, Rovi
Been a fan of her since her album dropped but rarely hear anything about her. I have all her albums but never see/hear about concerts or anything. If you search YouTube there is a an old BET Planet Groove concert of her. That'll have to do until she decides to come to the ATL...
Great album with a laid back sort of vibe. I can recall hearing "Love is All Around" on the radio over the years wondering why the general public never "got her". Pleasantly surprised to hear her distinctive voice on the theme song for HBO series Noah's ARC. Ms. Evans still has it!
JUST saw the video for 7 Days off the Nomadic album, not yet featured here on Pandora. How do we get it on? Sounds n looks like an Instant Classic to me. With sounds and images like this I'm betting she WILL get her due!

I love love love the first cd she released in 97. I have replaced it twice and I am currently seeking a third replacement. It is sad that her vocal talents are under appreciated. It reminds me of another great vocalist who was not appreciated...Phyllis Hyman. I can only hope that someone will get a clue and give this girl her due ( I did not mean for that to rhyme...lol)
@ Eiyana Favers, I do agree she is a spectaular artist and gifted singer/songwriter, I wished she did receive more exposure and I have enjoyed her musical genius since '97 and the latest album does exemplify the same brilliance as the 1st! Much luv to AE! @ Susie: check out "Remember the love" on "Nomadic" hot joint

Pick up her most recent effort called "Nomadic" - wonderful! Adriana Evans is a wondrous talent who doesn't get her due. I love that she is out of the spotlight enough that she is able to maintain the integrity of her art, but I wish that she could have more radio play. More people need to hear her and know what real vocalists sound like. I've loved her voice since '97 - the woman can do no wrong vocally! If it weren't for artists like Adriana and Ledisi R&B would cease to exist!
She is someone who when you hear her you will never forget her vocals(album was wonderful!) but I always forget her name! Cant even find the album-bought it back in the days! I wish she would come back! May have to go diggin' the crates for her moms stuff too!

I bought this cd when it came out in 1997. Its all that and then some. You just press play and nothing else. Unfortunatley she hasn't come out with anything else since then which is truley sad. She needs to and can come back but where the hell is she?
