Air

More apt to cite stately rock paragons Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson as their inspirations than Derrick May or Aphex Twin, the French duo Air gained inclusion into the late-'90s electronica surge due chiefly to the labels their recordings appeared on, not the actual music they produced. Their sound, a variant of the classic disco sound coaxed into a relaxing Prozac vision of the late '70s, looked back to a variety of phenomena from the period -- synthesizer maestros Tomita, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Vangelis, new wave music of the non-spiky variety, and obscure Italian film soundtracks. Despite gaining quick entrance into the dance community (through releases for Source and Mo' Wax), Air's 1998 debut album, Moon Safari, charted a light -- well, airy -- course along soundscapes composed with melody lines by Moog and Rhodes, not Roland and Yamaha. The presence of several female vocalists, an equipment list whose number of pieces stretched into the dozens, and a Baroque tuba solo on one track -- all of this conspired to make Air more of a happening in the living room than the dancefloor.

Though Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel both grew up in Versailles, the two didn't meet until they began studying at the same college. Dunckel, who had studied at the Conservatoire in Paris, played in an alternative band named Orange. One of Dunckel's bandmates, Alex Gopher, introduced Godin into the lineup. While Gopher himself departed (later to record for the Solid label), Dunckel and Godin continued on, becoming Air by 1995. During 1996-1997, the duo released singles on Britain's Mo' Wax ("Modular") and the domestic Source label ("Casanova 70," "Le Soleil Est Prés de Moi"). Though Air often evinced the same '60s Continental charm as Dimitri from Paris -- due no doubt to the influence of Serge Gainsbourg -- the duo had little in common musically with other acts (Daft Punk) in the wave of French electronica lapping at the shores of Britain and America during 1997. That same year, Air remixed Depeche Mode and Neneh Cherry and joined French musique concrète popster Jean-Jacques Perrey for a track on the Source compilation Sourcelab, Vol. 3.

Signed to Virgin, Air released their debut album, Moon Safari, in early 1998. The singles "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars" became moderate hits in Britain and earned airplay on MTV. Later that year, Godin and Dunckel mounted an ambitious tour throughout Europe and America, though they had originally decided to forego live appearances. Their early singles were collected in 1999 under the title Premiers Symptomes; the duo's soundtrack to the Sofia Coppola film The Virgin Suicides followed in early 2000. Air's second studio effort, 10,000 Hz Legend, appeared in spring 2001 with a subsequent tour of the U.S., but critics and fans alike didn't appreciate the darker, more experimental direction. They bridged the gap between the pop of Moon Safari and the experimentalism of 10,000 Hz Legend with their 2004 release Talkie Walkie.

Along with touring in support of that album, the pair remained busy making music in 2005 and 2006: they collaborated, along with Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, on Charlotte Gainsbourg's album 5:55, and Dunckel released a solo album as Darkel. Cocker and Hannon also appeared on Air's fourth album, Pocket Symphony, which was released in early 2007. On one leg of the band's Pocket Symphony tour in 2008, the duo performed with just longtime collaborator and drummer Joey Waronker as their backing band. They kept this lineup for their next album, 2009's Love 2, which marked Air's first self-produced work and featured a more streamlined sound than some of their previous music. Dunckel and Godin went in a very different direction for their next album, which was based on an original score they created for the 1902 classic silent film Le Voyage Dans la Lune. The pair created the score in less than a month, working with collaborators such as Au Revoir Simone and Beach House's Victoria LeGrand, then expanded it into a full-length album that was released early in 2012. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Loved Air since 1998.. always have, always will
this is the greatest track in the history of recorded sound. period.
why not?
hombreazul
I was thinking the same. The bio is like an attack piece.
dcunning30
I agree with you databyter, the bio seems to dump on them. But in my opinion, this tune, Run is seductive is an odd way. I like it!
Judgemental bio. Not knowledgable enough about Air to say if it is accurate or not, but it is so obviously reading into the motivations, skills and tools of the artists that I will have to read elsewhere to learn more about them to make sure.
If I take it on face value it seems to say they suck and are equipment driven fluffers.

Love them....very underrated!
I like them a lot. Found them on my Sondre Lerche radio.

Ignoring this lame bio... what else can be said about this amazing duo that hasn't been said already... one word.... AMAZING!!!
frapichard
what did they do to you? this bio is terrible ...
cliff.smoot
This bio is an embarrassmen t . The first paragraph is terrible. Why is the author obsessed with answering a question, i.e., Is Air dance floor electronica? that nobody asked?
Air's music is so good to revisit Alone in Kyoto a personal favourite - Moon Safari in my Top 100 album's to have before you die

This bio's about as bad as M.I.A.'s bio. Seriously Pandora?
bukowskijunk
Yes, please rewrite this bio!
whoever wrote the bio should stop writing bio's. Shame on you pandora.

This bio needs to be rewritten in my opinion.

WTF music critic statement: ...the French duo Air gained inclusion into the late-'90s electronica surge due chiefly to the labels their recordings appeared on, not the actual music they produced. The same can be said about virtually every musician or group you have ever heard. Think about it. Why do you think we keep discovering new music? Answer: good marketing. It's not ideal and certainly not fair, but to pin the label on one band is just weak.
My favorite of theirs: La Femme D'Argent. The first time I heard it was as music added to an old film of San Francisco just days before the great earthquake and fire. Supposedly it was one of the first, if not the first, 35mm films ever made; the camera was mounted on the front of a streetcar. The film itself is amazing for its historic look at the city, but the song just blew me away. You can find the film on YouTube by searching the song.

This bio sucks bigtime. Get something more true to form, pandora. There's nothing disco nor Burt Bacharach about Air. The beats and the tunes and instruments are completely different than anything the reviewer mentioned. The reviewer simply couldn't come to terms with the idea of what downtempo chill or trip trip-pop kind of music is about. I'm guessing he's stuck in the 70's himself.
I cannot live without....A i r .
Das Moody Basterdos. Yeah, good song.
Ugh, this bio is so horrid. You can almost hear Perez Hilton reading it.
Great group though. Chalk up another great discovery thanks to Pandora.
Great music! But man... that pic makes them look like moody French bastards. I wonder if they ever smile...
Ppl ask who wrote this bio... says right at the end: John Bush, of Rovi, a company that was contracted by AllMusic to produce content (such as bios and reviews).

who wrote this Bio?
Awesome song, very chill...
Groovy baby
Trips me out every time.

Thought Highschool Lover was Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky at first. It's exactly the same piano track at first. Wasn't disappointed though.
Great duo! La Femme D'argent is one of the best songs! Napalm Love is another one.
nice tune- very smooth and silky.
loved their old stuff, new not so much of a friend.

Fell in love with Moon Safari and that was all she wrote...
I totally agree with Neil - was introduced to Air from The Virgin Suicides(Air ' s soundtrack was the best thing about the film)and Playground Love with its sonorous sax solo is one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. Thank you Air.
miwako15
these two know how to design many unique elements in music. My favorite musicians by far. This music can place ones state of mind in a dark sense of how the world works; yet in another sense clear ones conscious of any anxiety and maintain ones mind in peace- thanks air.
I don't know who was given permission to write this bio but it should be redone. I would say that Nicolas and Jean-Benoit has composed an excellent piece of work with layers of rhythms in a spacey rhythm and blues bass with jazzy keys that skate effortlessly and (what I love) expansively across the outer reaches of my mind. Thanks guys - super good stuff. I am still exploring the song. There may be aural archetypes at play.
<3 air and this genre.
Oooooooooooo ! ::dances::
Air was a sensation back in 1998 with the release of Moon Safari. It was almost overplayed like Moby. Their prolific output since that time has spawned a number of classics that I hope will be played for decades to come.
Air is not afraid to express the cliches of electronica in new modes and bring the kind of dignity to mood-scapes and cool-dark pop synth. It is as though they are the new manifestatio n of the Pet Shop Boys without the pop hype that the theatre of the mind will not embrace.
I'm also a brilliant typist- why doesnt this have spell check???
Just kinda getting into the genre, long time music lover of just about any variety. This newer stuff has really hit me by suprise- never thought I would like or consider sderious for that matter. Pandors introduced me to Morcheeba awhile back, now I'm hooked on this stuff as well as PAndora! Thanks guys, you're awesome!!
could listen to it every day of my life...espec i a l l y moon safari....an d actually have gone through periods where i have listened to it every day weeks on end....it is just what should always be in your background.. . l i k e the color of a wall or a chair you select...i need air in the air

Yeah, been enjoying AIR for years... as a thoughtful person, it's hard not to like. Its meditative, a friend to our mind.
once again im wondering why AIR isnt as popular as the likes of a lady gaga, like why don't people celebrate good music instead of praising the GLossy application of Shopping added to their Photo's and Video's. WAit till that Adobe VideoShop comes out and they seamlessly integrate CG into a persons body, creating plastic surgery at any time. JUST WAIT then get on YOURkoz.com and start posting, and help me raise awareness about the aweful example some set now adays....
