The Alan Parsons Project

As indicated by its name, the Alan Parsons Project was not a band so much as a concept overseen by the titular Parsons, a successful producer and engineer. Born in Britain on December 20, 1948, he began his musical career as a staff engineer at EMI Studios, and first garnered significant industry exposure via his work on the Beatles' 1969 masterpiece, Abbey Road. Parsons subsequently worked with Paul McCartney on several of Wings' earliest albums; he also oversaw recordings from Al Stewart, Cockney Rebel, and Pilot, but solidified his reputation by working on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Influenced by his work on Stewart's concept album Time Passages, Parsons decided to begin creating his own thematic records; along with songwriter Eric Woolfson, he soon founded the Alan Parsons Project. Although Parsons played keyboards and infrequently sang on his records, the Project was designed primarily as a forum for a revolving collection of vocalists and session players -- among them Arthur Brown, ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone, Cockney Rebel's Steve Harley, the Hollies' Allan Clarke, and guitarist Ian Bairnson -- to interpret and perform Parsons and Woolfson's conceptually linked, lushly synthesized music.

The Project debuted in 1975 with Tales of Mystery and Imagination, a collection inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe; similarly, the science fiction of Isaac Asimov served as the raw material for 1977's follow-up, I Robot. With 1980's The Turn of a Friendly Card, a meditation on gambling, the Alan Parsons Project scored a Top 20 hit, "Games People Play"; 1982's Eye in the Sky was the Project's most successful effort, and notched a Top Three hit with its title track. While 1984's Ammonia Avenue went gold, the Project's subsequent LPs earned little notice, although records like 1985's Vulture Culture, 1987's Gaudi, and 1996's On Air found favor with longtime fans. Time Machine followed in 1999. After taking a five-year hiatus, Parsons returned in 2004 with A Valid Path. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

He was the one who brought Pink Floyd the recording he made in a London clock shop that became the intro to the song Time.

AP engineered and produced both LPs Year of the Cat and Time Passages for Al Stewart, two classic albums that never seem to get the notoriety they deserve...

I have 2nd row seats for his concert in Phoenix on Oct. 5th. One of my favorite musical acts ever (moved down to 3rd place since I discovered Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson who Alan has worked with), I have listened to Tales from the time it came out. I Robot was a great follow up and while the subsequent albums lacked a bit of the spacey elements the first 2 did I still enjoy them. I have seen them a couple times before and loved them both times. 2nd row...Too cool.

Although Alan and Eric parted ways a few decades ago, it was sad to have Eric pass (cancer). I've seen Alan twice in Seattle, post Eric, because Eric did not want to tour (APP never toured prior to that). Anyway, let's not forget who sound engineered the longest running album is rock history...Da r k side of the Moon. I'm glad to hear he's still touring this year. Cheers.

The bio should be updated; afterGaudi it was no longer the Project as Alan soldiered on without songwriter Woolfson. Eric went into musicals, and, sadly, has now passed away.

I owe an infinite Thank you to my 7th grade music teacher. Back in 1980, she introduced us to some thing called Concept album with the examples Tales of Mystery and Imagination and Pink Floyd's The Wall. And I - prior to that music class totally and utterly oblivious to rock music - discovered a whole new world.

Alan Parsons Project has ALWAYS been one of those bands on my bucket list and I finally got to see them is a small venue in Washington state recently. They were every bit as awesome as I expected them to be! They are the tightest band I've ever heard. Been playing the CD's to death ever since! AWESOME CONCERT!!!!

Don't get me wrong, love Pandora, just wish we didn't have to look up the artists that contributed to individual songs. Old timers like me remember reading album covers and finding out who the musicians were that played on our favorite songs. For example, who's singing lead on this tune?

Anyways, the key to this plan is the giant laser. It was invented by the noted Cambridge physicist Dr. Parsons. Therefore, we shall call it... The Alan Parsons Project! Dr.E

Saw them in concert last night in Hollywood Florida, it was an amazing experience and the music was still tight . Got a crowd of graying rockers off their feet, dancing and screaming. I think that says it all!

Parsons has a real gift - working with Beatles and Paul and Wings seems to sum it up to me. Loved everything ever done by Parsons even when I was too young to know anything!
