The Album Leaf is the solo project of Jimmy LaValle, a San Diego-based songwriter who began recording solo material one year after forming the post-rock band Tristeza. Inspired by a number of genres -- classical, jazz, and post-rock among them -- LaValle constructed his own songs in a similarly eclectic manner, utilizing everything from ambient noise to field recordings to radio transmissions. An Orchestrated Rise to Fall introduced the resulting sound in 1999. An EP (In an Off White Room) preceded the release of LaValle's second full-length album, One Day I'll Be on Time, which was released by Tiger Style in March 2001. The Album Leaf's profile blossomed as a result of those recordings, and LaValle found himself opening shows for Sigur Rós' first American tour that fall. By the time he began recording his third album, he'd also secured the services of Sigur Rós' Iceland studios, along with the participation of several of that band's members. The resulting album, In a Safe Place, appeared on the Sub Pop label in June 2004.
The Seal Beach EP, originally issued in 2003 in Spain, appeared stateside in early 2005, and LaValle's next album, Into the Blue Again, followed in September 2006. The Album Leaf toured sporadically throughout the remainder of the decade, performing in multiple continents and opening for Devendra Banhart at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008. Two years later, LaValle returned with his fifth full-length album, A Chorus of Storytellers. ~ Mike DaRonco, Rovi
considering that this song played on a rock station that I created, I wasn't expecting this. Even though I didn't, it's a beautiful track. Really ambient.
The guy that asked how do bands like The Album Leaf stay afloat? We work jobs just like you do. I have a station on Pandora and work almost everyday. Most of us don't care about fame or anything like that. We just love to play music.
I already loved this guy, and I just realized he's from San Diego- very much like myself. Now I love him (and his music, ofcourse) that much more. Hehe :)
@DescJockey I think you'd be surprised how many people actually do listen to those bands, especially Sigur Ros. In Disney's How To Train Your Dragon, Jonsi (who is in Sigur Ros) had his song Sticks and Stones played in the credits, which kind of made their popularity soar. And no band actually needs popularity in order to record full length albums.
You know, I love how gentle this band sounds. I mean, I listen to some punishing stuff, but this band is totally gentle with how they go about creating their soundscapes.
Even with quality musicianship and composition, I often wonder how so many of these bands can even have enough of a fan base to stay afloat, much less keep recording full studio albums. I don't know anyone else who listens to Tristeza, Album Leaf, or even Sigur Ros, for that matter. How do they do it?
so you know jimmy? well hes my cousin :D i even went to see him get married to his wife kate in San Diego two summers ago. and me him and my step dad played guitar hero.

They don't care about s**t like how popular they are. That's what makes them so good.
