Born to Panamanian parents in Los Angeles in 1979, E. Nathaniel Dawkins (aka Aloe Blacc) first began playing trumpet in elementary school, and continued with the instrument throughout high school. There he also independently released Imaginary Friends, produced by DJ Exile, with whom he would go on to form the hip-hop group Emanon. While at college at USC, though his artistic endeavors were placed behind his scholastic goals, Aloe still managed to learn how to play the guitar and the piano, and after graduating and spending some time in the corporate world, he decided to return to his first love, music. In 2005 Emanon's full-length debut, The Waiting Room, came out on Shaman Works, and the next year his first solo album, Shine Through, a combination of neo-soul and Latin music, was released on Stones Throw. He partnered with the Truth & Soul Productions crew for 2010s more organic effort Good Things. The album featured the hit single I Need a Dollar along with a cover version of the Velvet Undergrounds Femme Fatale. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi
Aloe Blacc is MUSIC!! this is true talent w/o a gimmick behind it!! This is raw vocals, no auto tune or techno beats. Refreshing even for a young woman under 30, as even I think the music out now is garbage. Much respect to REAL artists like Aloe Blacc that paint pictures and not tell fake stories. I stand behind real artistry and I will forever be an Aloe Blacc fan. He has brought my mother and I a lil closer as we share common interest in him. Thank you Aloe for touching me through your music

I love this song, love the rhythm, love the smooth voice that takes me back in time...
I hear "I Need A Dollar" from the hbo show but didn't really know who it was. then a friend told me about his music. this guy is super talented - the videos shot in the subway - are AMAZING. he sounds great for sure the fact that so many just keep walking by without noticing the truly talented artist a few feet away blows my mind. GOOD LIVE ENTERTAINMENT - it makes the world a better place to live as far as I'm concerned.
~I must say that you & your band totally rocks! Much love~I loved the V'day performance this weekend~so I had to go & look up this album & other songs of Aloe Blacc here on pandora & his myspace... Very classY, jazzy, soulful taste of harmonies combined, as well as a splash of reggae, latin & underground hip hop flavors incorporated knocked me off my feet & onto the dance floor! I LOVE IT, EYE LOVE IT, WE LOVE IT! ROCK ON ALOE'!!! ~
