Andreas Vollenweider was one of the few musicians to gain superstar status as a "new age artist" back when the term was first used as a marketing category in the mid-'80s. The Swiss harpist, however, quickly transcended the need for alternative record sales when his albums simultaneously broached Billboard's pop, jazz, and classical charts in 1986. Born in Zurich in 1953, Vollenweider was ensconced in the city's fine art scene, courtesy of his father, one of Europe's leading organists. After becoming proficient on guitar, flute, and other instruments, the young Vollenweider developed a passion for the harp, which he modified to suit his needs. Not only did he construct a damper to expedite more rhythmic playing, he broadened the harp's tonal range by electrifying it. His buoyant funk beats, exotic pan-cultural influences, and colorful harp improvisations began to sweep Europe in the early '80s as Vollenweider signed with CBS Records to release Behind the Gardens...Behind the Wall. Three albums later, he won his first Grammy for 1987's Down to the Moon. Over the years, Vollenweider has managed to maintain his artistic integrity and vision despite increasing commercial success. The harpist's 1991 album Book of Roses is a testament to his ability to expand his scope as a composer while keeping his trademark sound intact; after a lenghty hiatus, he issued Kryptos in 1998, followed two years later by Cosmopoly. Numerous reissues and collection followed, including a new set of holiday material called Midnight Clear in 2006. ~ Linda Kohanov, Rovi
I would love to hear White Winds also. This is my most favorite album, my Dad first heard this and urged me to listen. Never have I listened to such beautiful music, it stays with you forever!
I was introduced to AV back in the eighty's. The homeopathic physician/chiropractor I used to see would play his music. His music is mystical, enchanting, relaxing, refreshing, and good for your soul. Absolutely love how the music captivates your mind and takes you on a fabulous journey through the ether plane...

We threw roses on the stage during the many ovations he got when I attended his concert in Beverly Hills during the 80's. That fantastic night reigns supreme in my memory!

I've been in love with his music since 1986 when I saw him appear on the Johnny Carson show. I bought White Winds, Caverna Magica and Down to the Moon immediately. Later on came all of his others. Saw him at the Arie Crown Theatre back in October, 1989 for the Dancing with the Lion tour. Mellow, smooth and calming.

When is he coming back to Chicago? It's been since '89 I believe for the Dancing with the Lion tour. His music is the truth!

I have seen him and the band twice in concert! Time for another west coast tour!
I first heard of andreas while dating my now husband. We went to one of his concerts while living in Atlanta, Ga., have LOVED his music ever since. Simply Beautiful!
Love Andreas. Had a girlfriend in college who loved his music as much as me. Nothing better than a nice sunset, bottle of wine, Andreas playing and hanging out with someone who enjoys the type of music you do.
I was in an elevator the other day and this was on...... then, I was put on hold by a big corporation and I heard it again. After that, I was in the dentist's chair and what do you know? A.V. again! When I got home, I put the tv on the weather channel, and as they scrolled the forecast.....more A.V. music. .... But seriously, I do like the man and his music.
Caverna Magica was divine music in 1983, and I am so glad he is still performing with his unique instrumentation and meditative quality, which are forever young.

The most profound musician! Bring beautiful memories deep from my soul journey.
He has been a long time favorite of mine...You know an artist is good when they can take a long break and come back as great as ever and even better...Vollenweider is a great example of staying true to his art.
Oh man, amazing! I haven't heard Andreas Vollenweider since I was a kid. I just rediscovered him thanks to a random yoga instructor playing one of his songs.
I first heard Andreas Vollenweider at the Denver Planitarium in 1983. I bought 3 of his CDs shortly after that. Then, two years later my mother was diagnosed with cancer and in a lot of pain - we played Vollenweider CDs for her endlessly, as she said she was able to "go somewhere else" when she listened to them. Since then I have a special connection to the MAGIC he creates for us all.
Andreas has been a favorite for over 25 years now. Still reminds me of this guy I saw running and dancing through the park playing his harp, though. Really is so much more than just "new age". I think I own at least 6 CD's...and love 'em all! The early ones were thematic...felt like you'd seen a movie or been to a symphony.
I saw him in his very first concert on his first tour to the USA...in North Hampton Mas. at Smith College, even before he made it to NYC....spons o r e d by Greenpeace as I remember. Believe it or not, I attended with a couple of Tibetan Buddhist Monk Doctors...th

His music always improves my mood. I play Vollenweider for my 5 yr. old grandson. He loves this music!
Down to the Moon is still really, really good , and it is now 22 yrs. old. Even my 77 yr. old Dad enjoys it.............

Down to the Moon is one of my favorite albums/CD's. It always takes me back to a magical and special love affair that I was involved in at that time. Although the relationship didn't make it, the music, the emotions, and the feelings from his music certainly did.

White Winds caught my attention back when. What I've noticed is that when a Vollenweider selection plays, it's instantly recognizable as such. It's good music, but it doesn't seem to enjoy background, limits itself to the fore.

keep up the good work, man!
His music is magical! The mixture of music, nature sounds and voice is amazing!
