Andreas Vollenweider

Andreas Vollenweider was one of the few musicians to gain superstar status as a "new age artist" back when the term was first used as a marketing category in the mid-'80s. The Swiss harpist, however, quickly transcended the need for alternative record sales when his albums simultaneously broached Billboard's pop, jazz, and classical charts in 1986. Born in Zurich in 1953, Vollenweider was ensconced in the city's fine art scene, courtesy of his father, one of Europe's leading organists. After becoming proficient on guitar, flute, and other instruments, the young Vollenweider developed a passion for the harp, which he modified to suit his needs. Not only did he construct a damper to expedite more rhythmic playing, he broadened the harp's tonal range by electrifying it. His buoyant funk beats, exotic pan-cultural influences, and colorful harp improvisations began to sweep Europe in the early '80s as Vollenweider signed with CBS Records to release Behind the Gardens...Behind the Wall. Three albums later, he won his first Grammy for 1987's Down to the Moon. Over the years, Vollenweider has managed to maintain his artistic integrity and vision despite increasing commercial success. The harpist's 1991 album Book of Roses is a testament to his ability to expand his scope as a composer while keeping his trademark sound intact; after a lenghty hiatus, he issued Kryptos in 1998, followed two years later by Cosmopoly. Numerous reissues and collection followed, including a new set of holiday material called Midnight Clear in 2006. ~ Linda Kohanov

Andreas, you've been around in my life for 30 years and I keep coming back to you. The people who introduced me to you, my mum and dad, have passed on but you and I continue. How far we've come.

Like everyone else, I discovered him in the Eighties with Caverna Magica and Down To The Moon. I was lying in bed just the other day and I don't know why but I suddenly started trying to remember his name. Found it and his beautiful music again. It takes me back to a really good time in my life.

I had ordered some music from Columbia Music record club, somehow I got AV by mistake. It sat on my dresser for about 2 months with me forgetting to mail it back for a replacement. One day I opened the disc and played it. The disc was White Winds, I have been a fan since. It was some of the most relaxing music I have ever heard. I play AV on my way to interviews or stressful moments in my life when I am filled with anxiety. I did get a chance to see AV in Atlanta GA. He was unbelievable .

I was introduced to this artist back in the day when I would explore my father's music. This was back in the 80's. Damn I'm old and this music is still good!

Love the places this music has taken me Thanks

I just read every comment posted here and saw little mention of Book of Roses, which, in my opinion is his greatest work. Book of Roses is thematic; presented from the perspective of a young girl's personaladve n t u r e As I have listened, I have always heard something new, some subtle nuance that I had missed before. Like a beautiful tapestry, this album is lush with orchestratio n . A true masterpiece. If anyone knows the lyrics or how to find English translations I would love to hear from you.

Agree with you MartyvH. I first discovered Andreas with the White Winds album & though I've added others to my collection over time, that one will probably always be my favourite.

I became tired of waiting for the White Winds album to be added and bought the CD. To have it playing in my car when it was such a special part of my childhood (see comment from 2 years back) is a surreal and positive experience, but the fact that it's not here is still disappointin g . I'm paying for Pandora One as well.

The very first time I heard AV was when I was in complete darkness inside a sensory deprivation tank... What an amazing experience that was! Loved his music ever since. Transformati v e and relaxing.

How does 1 begin to describe and classify this genre of music. You cannot. Trying to would just destroy the essence of the message being propagated by Mr.AV.He introduced the Swiss electracoust i c HARP,a very unique instrument in the world of New Age music.Saw him 1st at a London theater in 1989 in white regalia flowing outfit looking like a fairy angel in an enchanted forest darting from 1 instrument to the other. This music touches your soul;been hooked ever since. Thanks Mr.Andreas V.GODBLES

I also used his music and similar sounds in many Homebirths as a midwife when women were in transition, very soothing and helpfuldurin g natural birth when it gets tuff and its nice to have spacey music to let go with and let the baby arrive into this earthly realm

I was blessed to see AV in early 80's in Eugene Or,wonderful concert, the whole stage was etherical- music came out of a smokey cloud, slowly the lights came on and he appeared all in white like an angel through the clouds. Wonder if he willplay in OR, or northern CA in near future? definately worth seeing hi an amazing experience

I've been listening to AV since he first emerged in the early 80s. I've been fortunate to see him twice (also in the 80s). His concerts were a magnificent performance of both sight and sound. He is so innovate and entertaining .

I used to install window treatments several years ago (Mid eighties) and remember vividly one customers home we had gone to who happened to be an audophile. He had a superior sound system that I still envy today and on that day was the very first time I had heard AV. He had the down to the moon album playing and I just remember being completely blown away by the clarity and soothing quality of this music. I've been a fan since that day and it never ceases to relax me. Love it!

I just listened to the track The Glass Hall, from the White Winds album, through less-than-ko s h e r means (I only streamed it, it didn't save a copy) and I heard the greatness we are missing here. It takes me right back to times and places long ago where there was absolutely no stress or worry! The sounds. The effortlessly exotic, truly timeless, otherworldly but entertaining sounds! We need White Winds on Pandora.

My first AV Love was definitely White Winds back in '84 and took that & Down to the Moon with me to college and turned a few of my friends on to him blasting it in my dorm room making it feel like we were in Paradise. I have all his albums and had to buy WW 3 times and DTTM twice ' cause I wore them out.

Why is White Winds not up on Pandora? I love that album so much. My late parents had it on cassette and played it in their acupuncture clinic.

I was introduced to AV back in the eighty's. The homeopathic physician/ch i r o p r a c t o r I used to see would play his music. His music is mystical, enchanting, relaxing, refreshing, and good for your soul. Absolutely love how the music captivates your mind and takes you on a fabulous journey through the ether plane...
