Formed in 1999, Swedish progressive metal band Andromeda hails from the southernmost city of Malmö and centers around virtuoso guitar player Johan Reinholdz. Also featuring keyboardist Martin Hedin, bassist Gert Dunn, and drummer Thomas Lejon, Andromeda had no trouble securing a record deal with WAR Music on the strength of their very first demo, but holding onto a vocalist proved a tad more challenging. In fact, the band found itself in need of a singer on the eve of starting recording on their 2001 debut album, Extension of the Wish. As an emergency measure, they called upon Darkane vocalist Lawrence Mackrory to lend a hand -- and came away with surprisingly positive results, it must be said. A permanent frontman, David Fremberg, was brought in before the sophomore II = I, which once again showcased the band's ambitious songwriting and sterling musicianship. Reinholdz has also been known to take on the odd bit of session work, lending his guitar heroics to Nonexist's Deus Deceptor LP. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
"Love it. If youre a fan of this be sure to check out Dream Theater." Lol, flipped around, just heard a song from these guys on my Dream Theater radio, just what i was looking for.
I don't know about you, but this sound pretty awesome. That's just my opinion, but I happen to dig synth-heavy, guitar-and-drum-driven prog-metal, and this sounds like synth-heavy, guitar-and-drum-driven prog-metal...FROM SWEDEN! Lest we forget, Sweden is also the home of prog-death metal band Opeth.
I was really excited to see they added the Playing Off the Board live album, and the song The Words Unspoken of that album started playing in one of my stations. I was really disappointed when it was the song with the original singer and not David Fremberg.
"wonders why there only one album... could it be they are one hit wonders?"
there are actually 4 albums: Extension of the Wish, II=I, Chimaera, and The Immunity Zone.
Extension of the Wish is your stereotypical virtuoso-ish prog that's fun to listen to. II=I is their most experimental album, with some REALLY original stuff, creativity up the wazzoo (with some songs that weren't so great), and Chimaera and The Immunity Zone can best be described as alternative rock with a synthesizer. Yep, And
The guitarist in this band sounds like a cross between Symphony X's Michael Romeo (high praise there imo) and Timo I-forget-his-last-name from Stratovarius. Awesome band, not just another cookie-cutter prog outfit.
I believe they have five albums. Most people love the guitar work but the percussion it what pushes it over the top for me. The Immunity Zone CD has some very complex drumming on it. Drummer Thomas Lejon
Awesome stuff -- not sad the station plays as much rush as it does to be frank... even a rush station doesn't play that much rush ;-) which is a plus for me anyways.
the lack of a truly dynamic vocalist seems to be a theme with a lot of European metal bands

Hi All Dam lead vocal guys think their God, and can control the whole band. Steve Perry from Journey, fired Steve Smith the Monster drummer in all areas! How long did Steve P. Last after he left? Look at Dream Theater, Marillion, Same story too

Wow ! Dazzling musicianship, never a dull moment- a perfect example of Synergy in a band.
This is a brilliant album and yes I like the original vocals on this album. it's a pity they went for a different permanent vocalist and also a pity that their follow up albums are not as good as this one.
I actually like the singer. They re-did a couple of these songs with a different singer. They replaced the vocal track with someone else's vocals. They have the songs up on their myspace page if anyone is curious.

Only complaint is the singer sounds like he has a little bit of a cold. Other than that, fantastic!

Keep it coming! Sherry
Andromeda isn't prog anymore, they kinda suck.
