Anthony Phillips

Anthony Phillips was one of the founding members of Genesis, having attended the Charterhouse School in Surrey with Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford. Phillips and Rutherford (who had played together in another band before linking up with Gabriel and Banks), were the principal composing members of Genesis during their formative years, right into their first recording venture on English Decca ("Silent Sun," etc.) under the aegis of Jonathan King. Much of Phillips' and Rutherford's music was too subtle and introspective to work for the fledgling band on-stage, and eventually composition became more of a shared effort. By the time the group cut its second album, Trespass, however, Phillips had receded into the background, propelled by a crippling onset of stage fright that forced him out of the lineup following the album's release. His influence, ironically, was felt very strongly on their subsequent breakthrough third album, Nursery Cryme, the title track was the band's first number to attract a wide audience in progressive rock circles for its introduction and opening minute, which used material that Phillips had written and recorded (as a demo) as early as 1969.

Little more was heard from Anthony Phillips until 1977, when he released his first solo album, The Geese and the Ghost, followed by Wise After the Event a year later, and then a collection of early demo recordings, Private Parts and Pieces, also issued in 1978. Phillips has re-emerged periodically, working in a style that is much closer to the classically influenced original Genesis sound than to the work of the current version of the group. He retains a cult of fans, similar in certain respects to Peter Banks of Yes (another guitar player who quit an art-rock band at a critical early juncture in their history), but recording more frequently. He also writes a considerable amount of music for television and movies, and remains a guitarist of supreme skill and confidence, steeped in classical, pre-Baroque, and folk influences, able to record entire albums featuring only his acoustic instrument. Phillips' skills on the keyboard, principally synthesizer and Mellotron, are more limited, and were never exploited within a group context, but his studio recordings reveal a distinctive character to his compositions on those instruments as well. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Whatta find life long hardcore Genesis fan..this is incredible that classic autumn classical guitar rock sound Hillbilly ? These guys were rockin England France Italy Germany long before your Douche Eletrx which sounds like I think Im classy euro trash
Truly awesome string-work, but when you go to "your" specifically composed "Station" ready to drift off to some Deutche Electroniix, the last thing you're expecting is Hillbilly staccato guitar work! Tad confused!
I concur. Various members of Genesis and Yes. Huge influence on me as well.
40 years later I can say genesis and various members have had the most influence on me musically.

It's great to see The Geese And The Ghost in the lineup.
In referring to Genesis' Nursery Cryme, there is no title track. I think what the author is referring to is The Musical Box.

Wow! This is what seems to have attracted me to Genesis in the first place. Im disapointed in myself for not getting to know Anthony's Music earlier.

Anthony Phillips has arguably been one of the most talented musicians to have come from the Genesis group of players. His body of solo work, including his masterpiece " Wize after the event " remain unrivialed.
the blurb mentions Nursey Cryme and refers to a title track. There is no title track per se, although The Musical Box suggests the album title.
and yes, "The Geese and the Ghost" should be here. It almost counts as a Genesis Album.

what about "The Geese and the Ghost album?
great atmospheric sound. make me remember those days listening to the king biscuit flour hour on the radio waiting for a great Genesis concert broadcast... . I'm dating myself now...
So good that sometimes he sounds like Phil Keaggy.
(my biggest compliment)
The AP album "Slow Dance" is an outstanding atmosphere piece. It features broaders forms of intrumentati o n and percussion.
Great tune,I have never heard this one- I am a big Genesis fan - Anthony phiilips needs more airplay- I have heard that he appears on steve hacketts latest album - its about time they got together
GREAT GUITAR WORK, HARMONIC SOUND
Good stuff, true art
Big, big, BIG Anthony Phillips fan! Pandora seriously needs to get his other Private Parts and Pieces albums (like IV "A Catch at the Tables", V "Twelve", and III "Antiques"). I was also going to say "Slow Dance" (an absolutely brilliant album), but that can't be broken down into Pandora-size d chunks. I have the 25+ albums to his name and absolutely adore his music.
Dang it! Just when I thought I wasn't going to find another artist to like/love/fo l l o w ! !

1984 is a brilliant album. Oddly, it's very happy and uplifting in sound and style. No lyrics. Great stuff. Also, Private Parts and Pieces II with "The Scottish Suite" is just excellent. I need to get more of his albums.
I have all his music! I agree, Geese and the Ghost is a wonderful first album, but what I love most is that he swings from electronic to classical themes. Just another Ant fan. Wish he would tour in the USA.
do you have his album "1984" ? this would be cool.

I know little of Genesis or of this guy. But very poetic music with depth and nuance. First I've heard of him.
The Geese and the Ghost is one of the best albums ever made. Wise after the
Event is right there too. Another interesting one is Sides.
where is the album titled the geese and the ghost ?
A fantastic artist, I often wonder how different Genesis would have been had he not suffered from stage fright and stayed with the band.
