Antoine Reicha

February 26, 1770 - May 28, 1836
born in Prague, Czech Republic, composed during the Classical period
Antoine Reicha (1770-1836) may have lived and composed into the Romantic era, but his music is solidly rooted in the Classical, with a thorough absorption of the lessons of Haydn and Salieri, and despite his friendship with the innovative Beethoven. Reicha, in turn, wrote some of nineteenth century Europe's more widely used treatises on composition. He strove to successfully compose in all genres, but his operas and choral works -- some of which are quite well-crafted and attractive -- and his orchestral music have had relatively modest appreciation compared to his large body of chamber music, particularly the works for wind instruments. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi

Four years later, Reicha's music is still pretty good.

Our woodwind quintet loved to play Reicha's works.

Reicha was in fact from the Slavic regions, but moved to Paris so the description fits.

But only these two albums on Pandora? You've got to be kidding us, Symphonies, concertos, and all of the wind quintets, plus some string quartet, quintet, and strings with instruments are not yet here.

I have always felt that Anton Reicha is the Mr. Fezziwig of the early classicists. This is wholly impression, unsupported by research, but the imagination and playful sense of drama, displayed best in his well-known wind works, seem costumed in the formalisms of the period - like a stout fellow arriving at a party dressed in the rich clothing of a burgher but dancing with the freedom of a child.

I kinda leicha Anton Reicha.
