Anton Bruckner

September 4, 1824 - October 11, 1896
born in Ansfelden, Austria, composed during the Romantic period
Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was an Austrian composer of the late Romantic era. A skilled organist and teacher of music theory, Bruckner developed slowly and found composition difficult. His insecurities and the advice of well-meaning followers led him to revise many of his 11 symphonies several times, resulting in a variety of published editions. Stylistically, his works grew out of the Viennese tradition of Beethoven and Schubert, but were strongly influenced by Wagner, which brought Bruckner into conflict with conservative critic and Brahms partisan Eduard Hanslick. The most popular of Bruckner's symphonies are the Fourth, nicknamed "Romantic," and the Seventh. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Bruckner's 8th (the original version - my copy is conducted by Eliahu Inbal) is one of my all-time favorites. The 8th exists in the original, a revised version and a composite version put together and conducted by Knappertbusc h . The revised version is stripped of all of its power. Knappertbusc h ' s composite manages to hold onto much of that power. The revised version is, IMHO, just awful.

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed in the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will appear on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works.

I heard it said Bruckner never made any $ except $50 for one composition! My kind of artist!

Just heard his Mass on Ave Maria radio. Fabulous. I've led a sheltered life. So glad to find this great composer and humble man.
Bruckner was one of the best.I am still surprised how many of you guys didn't even mention symphony no.6
It's an amazing piece,especi a l l y the beginning,rh y t h m i c a l l y and the chords of the brass section are amazing and unique.
The adagio in his 8th symphony has to be the greatest adagio in symphonic history. Lasting almost 25 minutes it has some of the most gorgeous melodies ever written.
9 is epic
Karajan's Bruckner boxed set is very good but I prefer Eugen Jochum DG boxed set of the complete Bruckner symphonies. Karajan does have a Bruckner 4th on Emi that's above reproach and one of the best recording of that work ever. The other that probably equals Karajan in the 4th is by Klemperer on Emi also. I think it's pretty high dollar (or was at one time) but well worth the investment. The Karajan 4th is pretty dirt cheap though.
Bruckner's 4th is absolutely phenomenal. We're attending a performance by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra on 11/17 in Birmingham-- - t h e y ' r e performing the entire 4th symphony. Woot!
Bruckner was an uneven composer. His 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th symphonies are amazing... and everything else he wrote is just good. But that's a lot better than you get with most composers! The 5th and 9th are my favorites and I have made a real collection of recordings of those works. I have yet to examine those scores very closely. I imagine there's a lot to learn from them!

whoever recorded this work in the 78 rpm era should have been flogged.it is so badly recorded that it is an abomination. a very limited dynamic range and a complete lack of bass make for me a terrible listening experience.b e l i e v e me when i claim that there were many excellent 78s especially when they were recorded in concert halls with distant miking.this travesty of sound is clearly anamolous.
Some of my favorite Bruckner interpretati o n s are found in the set of Georg Tintner conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
torpebak, I just listened to #8 in c-minor, it was really cool! it was on my Russian Sailors Dance station. =)
Completely unique sound!
Bruckner was one of the greatest symphonists of all time, rivalling even Beethoven. Although Karajan's interpretati o n s presented here are passable, they fall short of sublime. To hear what in my mind are the best Bruckner interpretati o n s listen to Eugene Jochum's versions with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, particularly the 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th symphonies. You will feel like you've touched Heaven.
