Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894) was a Russian composer and concert pianist, one of the most important virtuosi of the 19th century and nearly equal to Franz Liszt in repute. Rubinstein was taken under the wing of Duchess Elena Pavlovna, sister-in-law of the Tsar, who fostered his career and with him established the Russian Musical Society and the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Rubinstein actively pursued his concertizing while composing and teaching, and his tours took him across Europe and to the United States. Rubinstein's best-known opera was The Demon, and he also composed five piano concertos, six symphonies, and numerous keyboard works and songs. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
