Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) was an Italian composer who had early successes in Milan, Venice, and Paris, but came into his own as the imperial court music director in Vienna. His accomplishments as an operatic composer were prodigious, though his style was conservative and most of his oeuvre passed into obscurity, even before his death. He became much better known as the teacher of Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Hummel, and Czerny, and his legendary rivalry with Mozart led to false rumors of involvement with the younger composer's death. Salieri's music received renewed attention after the release of the 1984 film Amadeus. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
