April Verch

While her music is rooted in natural Canadian traditions -- specifically the Ottawa Valley fiddle style -- effervescent singer/fiddler April Verch is no stranger to blues, Latin music, Eastern European music, jazz, and Americana. Besides working all these genres into her own music, Verch also embraces the world of dance, and began taking stepdancing lessons at the age of three. The Pembroke, Ontario, native knew by the age of ten that fiddle playing and stepdancing were things she wanted to do professionally. Two self-released albums -- 1992's Springtime Fiddle and 1995's Fiddle Talk -- appeared before she finished high school. College meant Boston's Berklee School of Music and mastering more styles of fiddle playing. Within a year, the money had run out and Verch would move back to Canada, landing in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and country singer Tommy Hunter's band.

A solo gig in 2000 was attended by Rounder Records' Ken Irwin, and a year later Verchuosity became her debut for the label. Rave reviews and comparisons to Alison Krauss and Béla Fleck followed, along with a JUNO award (the "Canadian Grammy") for Best Roots/Traditional Solo Album. Before she would return in 2003 with From Where I Stand, April appeared on her father's debut solo album, Ralph Verch's rootsy No Other Would Do. Her 2006 release, Take Me Back, found Appalachian music expert Dirk Powell in the producer's chair and contributing his fretless banjo playing to a couple tracks. ~ David Jeffries

Don't read this. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. Don't stop this is freaky. But if you read this and ignore it you will get bad luck. Put this on 15 songs in 143 minutes. When you are done press the space bar and your crushes name appear in big letters on the screen. This is so creepy because it actually worksLeave a comment...

April is an amazing person with amazing musical talents. I met her at a bluegrass festival in Palisade Colorado a few years ago. She is so down to earth, funny and easy to talk to. I was in marketing assisting artists in selling their CD's and she sat down right next to me. Folks lined up to buy her CDs but also to get her autograph. After talking a little I told her I was just learning to play the Appalachian Dulcimer she told me she played the instrument as well and has won awards for her tale

I just heard April for the first time, amazing! So glad that she is recording her talents.

I've seen April perform several times and often play her first two releases. Every phrase she plays is so incredibly deft and all of the deft strokes add up to huge compositions with fire and breadth. "Spanish for Crown" is right near the top of my playlist! Another highlight for me ... the "dueling percussionis t " thing she does with her husband. Comic and heartwarming .

I was floored the first time I saw an April Verch video... I just love her step-dancing and fiddle-playi n g , and will buy a copy of everything she records. And take a look at her demonstratio n s of the different styles of fiddle music on D'Addario Strings... she is truly "one-of-a-ki n d " .

It's okay, Carrie. Some folks will always be lacking in tact. I have a daughter who's a flute player and I know exactly what you mean.

Oh, your daughter is a two-time Canadian Grand Master fiddle champion too?

Reminds me of my daughter, Katie's music. She is a violin player too.
