The lyrics aren't wrong......I bet Robbie Robertson was honored Aretha sang his song any way she wanted
They lyrics have been changed, not everyone that records this song, sings the same lyrics. What about that line does not make sense, either way, Carmen had to go and her friend (The Devil) could stick around.

The lyrics here are WRONG and don't even make sense. For example, the Lyric is, "I saw Carmen and the Devil walking side-by-side . I said, "Hey Carmen, come on, let's go downtown. She said, "I gotta go, but my friend can stick around."
