Jazz accordion-master, Van Damme plays much more than cool/accordion mush. In fact, he was an innovator during 60s post-bop. He is an unsung hero. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi
I had the pleasure to know Art Van Damme personally, and spent one on one time with him on several occasions. He was the most modest person I have ever met. When I was growing up in San Francisco in the 1950s the local radio disc jockey, Don Sherwood, would begin his 6:00 to 9:00 am program with At Sundown by The Art Van Damme Quintet. That always signaled the start of another good day in The City By The Bay.

I grew up in 1950's-60's Philadelphia listening to him. My dad, Joseph, was an accordion teacher in his spare time. I own several vinyl records of Van Damme and have some CD's as well

I met him briefly in NYC at Excelsior Accordions when I was 12 years old . My father was having adjustments made to his Excelsior accordion, and one of the owners, Mario Pancotti, introduced me to him. I was in awe. I marveled at the size of his hands, playing chords beyond octaves was easy! What taste, technique. The Art Tatum of the accordion. His sound was and is as unique on the accordion as Stan Getz was on the sax. What a talent.
Art is from Norway, MI in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He took accordion lessons from Pines Caviani of Iron Mountain. His proud teacher displayed his picture on the wall of the Caviani Music Store studio. Great and underrated accordionist who brought dignity to the instrument with his cool technique and sound. First listened to Art V. back in the early 1950's when living in the Chicago area. To this day, he is perhaps the greatest accordion player I have ever heard.
