Yeah. Thought I had missed an Elliot Smith album until I looked. Hopefully this guy won't stab himself in the heart.

This guy is undeniably Elliott Smith inspired. Good for him, he knows genius and works towards it.

Everyone wants to relate artists to Elliot Smith. Honestly, everyone should listen to Nick Drake. Because Elliot Smith and all of these guys are doing the same thing as Nick did...just 20-30 years later. SO if anything, there should be a Nick-O-Meter , and the bar shall be set very high. But honestly, it's a great style of music and many are doing it very well.

Wow. The "Elliott Smith" fan club is about as happy as Elliott seemed to be in his songs. Lighten up, gang. Sufjan Stevens, Jack Johnson, etc. should all be judged on their own merits -- not on the "Elliott-met e r " . If you want to comment on what a genius Elliott Smith was, why don't you do that in his comments section? As one other listener wrote below, we use Pandora to find similar music to others that we like. "Dewdrops" is a nice song. Ashton Allen? Need to hear more to decide what I think.

Artists like this are probably why Elliott Smith offed himself.

I don't know what it is about this guy that I don't like. It seems pompous and its almost as if he heard Elliott Smith and said, 'Yeah, I'll do that." Maybe that's what I don't like. I'm very protective of Elliott Smith and automaticall y look incredulousl y at anyone that sounds too much like him.

The worst thing I ever heard ...

Admitted: can't judge a performer on the basis of a single side. Yeah, sounds like E Smith (timbre, breathiness, light, expressive vocal touch), and that's a good, but the side I just listened to - the wildly overproduced "Steven's Song," which includes grating'60s- s t y l e Herb Alpert horns, a turn-off - cannot be any measure. I'd like to hear the entire CD, but cannot purchase on the basis of this first listening... .

The depth of similarity to Elliott does not dive any deeper than the very apparent. Delve a little deeper into his compositiona l skills and you realize he doesn't compare in the slightest.

I was gonna say. Completely sounds like Elliot Smith. Who is brilliant, so Ashton has to be at least considered half as brilliant. Even blatantly ripping off Elliott Smith is awesome.

Poor mans Elliot smith (who imho, was one of the best songwriters around, period). Some (not all) of the talent with regards to composition, none of the pathos or authenticity .

i like it! he reminds me of jack johnson. (thats how i found him.) :)

He does sound quite a bit like a Elliot Smith. Slightly happier though, heh.

I like this guy. The reason I'm listening to Pandora in the first place is so I can listen to other music that sounds like music I like. I like Elliot Smith, so I like Ashton Allen. QED.

What's wrong with sounding like Elliott Smith? He was only one of the greatest artists of all time. And he made music that sounded like the Beatles. "Dewdrops" is an awesome song.
Report as inappropriate
I'm gonna say that his stuff is good, but the only way I can tell him apart from Elliott Smith is the fact that his voice is lower. Good tunes, lacking in originality

I like "Starting Over." I'm still gettin gused to his other songs.

doesnt sound any more similar to ES than Kevin Tihista, Iron and Wine, etc. etc.

There are alot of folks out there that sound like their influences. why you guys are piling up on this guy is beyond me.

"starting over" sounds good to me.

I dig sounding like your influences sometimes, but this is just silly.

I love it. Beautiful.

ha i love elliott to death
this guy blows ha

Every musical act is based on influences from other sources. I can think of worse things to be compared to. What is sounding here like criticism could very easily be converted into a compliment.

You guys are harsh... maybe he took an Art Garfunkel workshop. E. Smith might not have been as popular without the preceding "Garfunkel" sound.
Report as inappropriate
My thoughts exactly on the below comments. Sounds like he took an Elliott Smith workshop, ( string pick, familiar minor/major chord pattern, double the whispering voice) but doesn't quite possess the "it" factor Elliott had. Mr. Allen can't quite make it his own

Very similar to Eliott Smith, it's a less depressing tone with a little less guitar skill than E.S.

This sounds way too similar to Elliott Smith.
