Atrophy

Initially known as Heresy, Tucson, AZ's Atrophy was formed in 1986 and featured vocalist Brian Zimmerman, guitarists Chris Lykins and Rick Skowron, bassist James Gulotta, and drummer Tim Kelly. Modeled on the high-precision thrash metal quintets prowling the Bay Area a few hundreds of miles to the north (Exodus, Vio-Lence, etc.), Atrophy only recorded a couple of albums for Roadrunner Records and both 1988's Socialized Hate and 1990's Violent by Nature offered competently executed but relatively unoriginal (er, atrophied?) thrash metal. Indeed, few protests were heard when Atrophy decided to ride off into the sunset following these two efforts, and reunion gigs have understandably been scarce. However, years later Skowron, Gulotta, and Kelly did work together again in a new project named Head Circus. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

Killer show

$250.00 per show? That's pretty generous. Doubt they even made that much. Figure one show per week, divided by five... No one can survive on 50 bucks per week. If that. Even 25 years ago.

Too Bad they went on to be Doctors, Aviation designers and businessmen. They would have been much better off playing bars for 100 people at $250.00 per night.

These guys were actually on Road Racer. They almost signed to Metal Blade but after the Capitol deal fell thru Road Racer had the best deal. (on paper anyway)

I had Violent By Nature back when I was buying Thrash Tapes all the time. It was an okay album, great musicianship , but the production values were bad... just like they were on EVERY ALBUM METAL BLADE EVER RELEASED. Of course, by 1990 "thrash" was already dead. Death Metal and Grindcore were taking over, while bands like Metallica and Megadeth were settling into the mainstream and contemplatin g The Great Sell Out.
