When Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine in October 2000, the band's future was put into question. Within months rumors flew that ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell would replace de la Rocha. And gossip fueled truth, for Cornell joined the rest of Rage in the studio in May 2001. The mix was great and a musical bond was in the making: Cornell, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, and Tom Morello spent the next year writing and recording. By spring 2002, the foursome were no longer going by the Rage Against the Machine name and signed on for Ozzfest. But before the summer tour even got underway, Cornell quit the new project. He claimed it wasn't moving forward in the direction he'd hoped for. The breakdown didn't last, for Cornell rejoined by early fall. After tossing around the idea of being called Civilian, they settled on Audioslave. The single "Cochise," named for the great American Indian chief who died free and unconquered, hit radio in September 2002, and Audioslave's Epic full-length debut was released that November. The self-titled album eventually went multi-platinum on the strength of "Cochise" and the moody rocker "Like a Stone," and Audioslave supported it with gigs that included 2003 Lollapalooza dates. Cornell, Morello, Wilk, and Commerford returned in May 2005 with Out of Exile, which debuted at number one on Billboard. That same month they played an historic show in Havana, Cuba, that marked that country's first outdoor show by an American rock band (that fall releasing the whole shebang on the Live in Cuba DVD). Exile continued the band's platinum-selling ways -- singles like "Be Yourself" and "Doesn't Remind Me" went to the top of the charts -- and the guys wasted no time following up with album number three, Revelations, in early September 2006. Work on the album took only five weeks, since most of the songs had been fleshed out live over the previous year. In 2007, shortly after the members of Rage announced that they would reunite for that year's Coachella festival, Cornell left Audioslave, citing both personal and musical differences, and leaving the state of Audioslave uncertain. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi
I can't understand how people rank one band better than another when it all comes down to personal taste and opinion. It's like saying the Beatles are better than the Stones and the Grateful Dead are better than Bob Dylan or Led Zeppelin is better than Pink Floyd! All these groups have their own merits (and faults) but one thing cannot be disputed---They're ALL great if you enjoy their music!! PEACE!
Both bands are great, different styles so you can't even compare. RATM is heavier rock. If you like that then great, meanwhile Audioslave isn't as screamer
I hate people who like Audioslave better than RATM. Audioslave is okay, but it's nowhere close to the awesomeness of RATM. Also, they probably should have called the band Chris Cornell, because other than his voice, the rest is musically boring.
Audioslave was smart to feature Chris Cornell's vocals as the lead instrument. Check the mix, vocals are high volume!! He definitely sounds better in Audioslave than Soundgarden. As far as Rage goes, other than Morello's guitar, two totally different bands. As much as I love Cornell's studio voice, He sounds like crap live.
Anyone talking down audioslave or rage in acomparison debate on this comment post seems to not know what they are talking about and are just trying to appear smart... too say either band sucks tho, thats definately a bad judgement call if u ask me.
Rage > audioslave any day. audioslave just sounds like rage with a whiny singer. no offense chris, but you were only good in soundgarden. zack de la roca made rage back in the day and i hope they do another album.
I definitely like Cornell better with Audioslave and Rage better with Cornell vs. de la Rocha. It balanced out the melancholy (whiney) sound Cornell had with Soundgarden (same reason I dislike Alice In Chains) and, as much as I like Rage, de la Rocha's screaming starts to wear.
Clegman is an obvious troll!!! Like Derek and Vasam said....there is a reason why Tom Morello is one of the best guitarist not just of this generation but of all TIME!
Ok vasam & Derek, first of all I never said Morello couldn't play the guitar, I said he couldn't play a guitar SOLO! Second, because of your replies I committed to giving him another chance and with an open mind watched Morello's Night Watchman on Guitar Sessions. Having done that I must admit that I feel compelled to revise my prior comment and add that he can't sing either!!!
Chris Cornell is by far my favorite singer of all time, and pairing him with the band members of Rage Against the Machine had to be the smartest move he ever made.
Chris started writing all his winy music and kill the vibe...

chrsroc,Obviously RATM has had more success than Audioslave????Are you kidding????RATM only really had 1 big song (bulls on parade)...other than that they were just a failed experiment
Clegman, have you ever really listened to RATM? He plays solos in almost every song. Just because they are not the typical shred-o-matic or moody solos you are used to hearing from guitar players doesn't mean he can't play a solo. His solos are all amazing and they all sound different from song to song. He is an innovator of his instrument. His use of effects and unique techniques make his playing almost impossible to replicate by anyone else.

Thomas Baptiste Tom Morello (born May 30, 1964) is a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, his acoustic solo act The Nightwatchman, and his newest group, Street Sweeper Social Club. He was ranked #26 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
I like both Audioslave and Rage, but Cornell's voice added an artistic element that Rage just didn't have. AS had a good blend of different creative elements which in the end was there demise. Didn't matter too much to me since I stopped caring after they released Out of Exile. BTW - Always liked the instrumental portion of Rage & AS, those boys can rock! However, Morello can't play a guitar solo to save his life!!!

RATM never sucked and Zack is pretty awesome, 2 different styles he and Chris. Obviously RATM has had more success than Audioslave.
This Cornell guy is about as bad as Bob Dylan. WTF are you saying? I just hear...blaaah blaaah blaaah. The little communists from RATM really sold out to this garbage.
