Aztec Two-Step

The folk-rock duo Aztec Two-Step formed after a chance meeting between Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman in 1971. The pair met at an open stage at the Stone Phoenix, a Boston coffee house. Within a few months of working together, they recorded their debut as Aztec Two-Step, and a few months later, they had a deal with Elektra Records.

The duo's self-titled major-label debut was released in 1972 to widespread critical acclaim; joined by John Sebastian, Doug Dillard, and Jerry Yester, among others, the album spawned the early-'70s radio hit "The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On the Road)." Shulman (born and raised in New York) and Fowler (born and raised in a small town in Maine) didn't record their follow-up, Second Step, until three years later, followed by Two's Company (1976) and Adjoining Suites (1977). As folk-rock fell out of fashion in the mid- and late '70s, the duo continued to tour in support of their earlier albums. In 1979, Aztec Two-Step recorded and released The Times of Our Lives and then took a long hiatus from recording while continuing to tour around the U.S. and Europe.

Finally, in 1986, the duo recorded Living in America for Reflex Records, which won a 1987 New York Music Award for Best Folk Album. They followed it up three years later with See, It Was Like This in 1989 for the Flying Fish label. Aztec Two-Step's '90s releases included 1993's Of Age and an album recorded live at three different New York coffee houses in December, 1995, Highway Signs. In 1996, Fowler also recorded a short cassette of solo material about the sport of golf, one of his lifelong passions. ~ Richard Skelly, Rovi

I, too, first heard them on WNEW-FM in the very early 70's. I'll never forget the joy when I wandered into the Orangeburg Pub a few years later to find them playing there. They sounded as sweet live as they did in the studio.
First heard them on WBRU in the early 70's. Made a few trips to see them at SALT in Newport. Still catch them when they come around. Neil is the Eric Clapton of the acoustic Guitar.

As a high school student in RI in the early 70's I scraped up enough to drive my VW down to a coffee shop in Wickford. A $10 bill got me and my date the front table - one very impressed girlfriend. Their songs provided the soundtrack to my adolesence.. . and beyond. Thanks guys!

I first heard Aztec-Two Step on WNEW Radio in the early 70's while in College in NYC. Like some of the other comments I was hooked. I brought my younger brother to see a show at Folk City in early 80's. We drove down from CT in the dead of winter and it was sold-out. My brother noticed Rex walking across the street, told him what had happened. He put us on his Guest list, and we have been friends since.
I just saw him play in the Village last Sunday Night. They are Touring, check out their ATS w
Aztec Two Step showed up at the then new student union building at Stony Brook University in 1971 and asked if they could perform a set for anyone present. I have followed their music ever since.

They have been a mainstay of my music memories from my days at URI in the early 70's. Nothing transports me in time like listening to Aztec Two Step...two notes of "prisoner" and I am in Newport 1975. Thanks guys!
Love their acoustic guitar sound and lead playing. Two acoustic guitars nicely done, love the listen to both their guitars, nice match.
Highway Song still brings a tear to my eye.
Still around? Like Diane, this is memory music for me from college in mid-70's. Love it. Come play for us: www.taffysof e a t o n . c o m ! ! !
I first heard Highway Song on a cassette player in a powder blue VW back in the late 70's. I played it over and over and over...It was love at first listen! So glad to be able to hear them again and know they are still around.
I've been listening to these guys since they started. just love the way their sound comes across. very aproachable and fun to talk to. talented musicians with a great collection of songs. the kind of songs that stay with you for the rest of your life!
My musical partner at the time (early eighties)and I warmed up for Aztec Two Step in Ellington, CT. What an absolute joy to play the same stage as these two. I live in CA now and haven't heard them in years so it's nice to hear they are still playing!

I just saw them perform in West Palm Beach and they were wonderful. Great songs, great harmonies, great lyrics and great stage presence. They're natural comedians when they're not playing music.
I first saw them perform at the Stony Brook University student union building,in 1971, where they came unannounced and asked if it would be alright to play. I next saw them perform at the Main Point in Philadelphia in 1975? - A great duo with guitar dexterity and thoughtful lyrics.
