The B-52's

The first of many acts to cement the college town of Athens, GA, as a hotbed of alternative music, the B-52's took their name from the Southern slang for the mile-high bouffant wigs sported by singers Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson, a look emblematic of the band's campy, thrift-store aesthetic. The five-piece group, which also included founding members Fred Schneider, guitarist Ricky Wilson (Cindy's older brother), and drummer Keith Strickland, formed in the mid-'70s after a drunken evening at a Chinese restaurant; the bandmembers had little or no previous musical experience, and performed most of their earliest shows with taped guitar and percussion accompaniment.

After pressing up a few thousand copies of the single "Rock Lobster," the B-52's traveled to the famed Max's Kansas City club for their first paying gig. Subsequent appearances at CBGB brought the group to the attention of the New York press, and in 1979, they issued their self-titled debut album, a collection of manic, bizarre, and eminently danceable songs which scored an underground club hit with a reworked version of "Rock Lobster." The following year, they issued Wild Planet, which reached the Top 20 on the U.S. album charts; Party Mix!, an EP's worth of reworked material from the band's first two proper outings, appeared in 1981.

Released in 1982, Mesopotamia arose out of a series of aborted sessions with producer David Byrne which saw the B-52's largely abandon their trademark sense of humor, a situation rectified by the next year's Whammy!, a move into electronic territory. After a Schneider solo LP, 1984's Fred Schneider & the Shake Society, the group returned to the studio to record 1986's Bouncing Off the Satellites. On October 12, 1985, however, Ricky Wilson died; though originally his death was attributed to natural causes, it was later revealed that he had succumbed to AIDS. In light of Wilson's death, the group found it impossible to promote the new album, and they spent the next several years in seclusion.

In 1989, the B-52's finally returned with Cosmic Thing, their most commercially successful effort to date. Marked by Strickland's move from drums to guitar and club-friendly production from Don Was and Nile Rodgers, the album launched several hit singles, including the party smash "Love Shack," "Roam," and "Deadbeat Club." In 1990, Cindy Wilson retired from active duty, leaving the remaining trio to soldier on for 1992's Good Stuff. A year later, dubbed the BC-52's, they performed the theme song for Steven Spielberg's live-action feature The Flintstones. Wilson returned to the group for a tour supporting the release of 1998's hits collection Time Capsule. Four years later the double-disc Nude on the Moon compilation would dive deeper into their catalog by featuring rare tracks, live recordings, and remixes along with the hits. The year 2008 found the band returning with a new album for the first time in 16 years. Released by Astralwerks, Funplex, was a slick, synthesizer-driven effort produced by Steve Osborne. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

I listened to the B 52s when Rock Lobster hit the airwaves and I just run out and by a copy. Now I am older with young kids and the 52s are one of thier favorite bands. The whole house gets up and dances, except for Mom.

I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I absolutely agree with Craig M.... B-52's are one of my most pleasurable guilts! I'm absolutely addicted to the song 52 Girls and Dance this Mess around....
If I had a time machine I would grab Katy Perry and go back to the 80's and have a wild orgy with her and Kate Pierson & Cindy Wilson. Now that would be a Party Out Of Bounds in a Love Shack
The B52's are one of the most funnest, creative bands in the history of Rock Music.
My dad loves this song and so do I.i need more followers you follow me I follow you
The B-52's have a original style of music. Cool party music.

B-52s helped me maintain my sanity through High School...and they were always just so much fun. Saw them live many years later and they were still awesome! And, let me tell you, you haven't lived until you've sung Planet Claire at the top of your lungs while driving cross-countr y in a Plymouth Satellite.
one of the female lead singers lives in my neighborhood
Its hard to be still when Love Shack is playing.

Not much like Aerosmith and Kid Rock and the 2nd song played after Whitesnake. I like them but I am not seeing the connection except that I like them both. Still not feeling it with the mix though.
rdayley6
Private Idaho is my preferred state! This band rocked my world in 1980. These guys blazed!
madmonkey419
Just a suggestion? If someone starts a 'station' with, say, B-52's or maybe, Rage against the machine as the named Artist--- maybe the first song played could be by that artist? Just sayin'.
aprylwime
It's great to see the original group reunited on earth and in outer space.
Their new Live album is fantastic!
God Great just great!

Fun music!

I was in Athens when they got started. Incredible time for what I call organic raw music. Was a great time. Wide Spread Panic's John Bell was my roomie on summer and frat bro. You'd have to have lived it to get the most out of it. Incredible times. Glad so many still enjoy them.
Just returned from seeing my first B-52's show in over 31 years tonight at the House of Blues Boston (last show previous to that was Dr. Pepper concert series in NYC in 1980). There are certain instruments and musicians whose output can clear the air, think Jimi's guitar or the flugelhorn during the Brandenburg concerto. Once they're done there is nothing left to say. Kate Pierson did just that tonight. Her coloratura vibrata during the intro to Planet Claire (1st encore) simply blew me away.

kind of an obnoxious band... maybe one good song in all.
I like the B-52s, but I fail to understand how they fit into a Halloween Party Radio station.
Hero worship is a song that astounds me to this day. Kate puts it all out there with her vocals. If the bio says they weren't musicians when they started then they sure put it out thereas artists. Best party band out there.
Just saw them again this spring at Turning Stone Casino in NY! Fun as always...Rem e m b e r seeing them at the City Club in Boston pre-Love Shack...so fun...but thought I was going to die in the pit during Rock Lobster! HAHA!
My absolute favorite song when I was 12!!!!
Love it since way back 79 ............ . . . . . . . . . S t i l l love them will see them soon at the fair in seattle wa.

Love this band? Then check out Southern Culture on the Skids, a Chapel Hill, NC bunch of crazies who humorously and danceably dipict Southern "trailer park trash" culture. Their "Dirt Track Date" album is hilarious!
mamasami1967
Loved the cover of Rock Lobster (Rock Monster) on the Pirates who Don't Do Anything movie! My 2 1/2 year old grandson and I love to boogie to that in front of the TV!
This reminds me of good times. Also this reminds me of that T.V. show friends for some reason. A great sounding band that will never be reproduced.
rlbamberg
So in love....they are all sweet and down to Earth. Glad to call Cindy and friend
I've really loved this band since they first started! My boys even love the band and they are only 12 and 14 yrs old. They have great taste; what can I say! This band brings lots of great memories for me!
