Baskervilles

The Baskervilles are a sweet, effervescent indie pop ensemble whose sound, rooted in new wave and bubblegum pop, nods to acts like the Ladybug Transistor and the Shermans. The group originally formed in Tampa, FL, in 1993 as a collaboration between Rob Keith and Laura Taylor, and expanded to include Tom Gagnier on bass and Christoph Gerozissis on drums; the latter was replaced by drummer Craig Van Orsdale in 1995. The next few years were marked by changes in lineup and location; Taylor split with the group in 1996, and Keith and the remaining members of the band moved to New York the following year. Gerozissis rejoined the group, this time as a bass player, in 1998, and vocalist Stephanie Finucane was brought into the fold that same year.

With a solid lineup under their collective belts, the Baskervilles spent the next couple of years gigging in the New York area, and in 2000 recorded the songs that would become their self-titled debut album. These tracks were made available via the Baskervilles' website in early 2003, and they quickly found their way to Secret Crush Records' owner Gregg Weiss. The Baskervilles' debut, produced by Mitch Easter, was released on that label by spring of the following year, and the Midnight EP followed it up in 2005. In early 2006, the band put together four songs destined for a Swedish EP; the EP never materialized, however, and the Baskervilles opted to release the tracks for free on their website. The band then decided to keep the project going, and went on to release limited-edition singles on a monthly basis over the course of the following year. Each single showcased the work of various contemporary artists (including Wilhelm Sasnal and Lothar Hempel), and the entire undertaking was called the Twilight 14 Project. The singles were eventually gathered together and made into the Baskervilles' third full-length release, Twilight, which was released in the summer of 2008. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi
