The Be Good Tanyas play an old-timey blend of folk, country, and blues bolstered by sweet harmonies and traditional fingerpicking. The Vancouver trio has garnered comparisons to like-minded predecessors such as Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent. The group came together when Samantha Parton, who had spent her post-high-school years traveling with her guitar (drawing strong musical influence from visits to the Southern U.S.), returned to Vancouver. She and Jolie Holland initially formed the group, then added Frazey Ford and Trish Klein, whom Parton had met while planting trees in Nelson, British Columbia. (Ford and Winnipeg native Klein had met at Selkirk Music School in Nelson.) The musicians played together for the first time in 1999, busking outside the Lilith Fair venue in Vancouver. They soon moved on to local thrift store and coffee shop gigs. Holland left the group, and the remaining trio was soon touring Canada and released its debut album, Blue Horse, in 2001. Two years later, the ladies returned with the lighthearted sophomore effort Chinatown, while Hello Love, which included covers of Neil Young, Mississippi John Hurt, and even Prince, came out in 2006. The band officially went on hiatus in 2008, where it would remain until a performance at the 2011 Winnipeg Folk Festival. The following year saw the release of Collection, a career overview that included two new tracks. ~ Erik Hage, Rovi
Better than the critic Eric Hage gives credit, in part evidenced by their growing popularity among those who know something about music (now put your shirt back on...I'm not saying Eric doesn't know anything). They're good. Period.
I was turned on the Be Good Tanya's via RadioParadise. I really enjoy their music and always look to see if they might be playing in St. Louis, but to date I have not been able to see them. Definitely something I would love to experience. Very nice music.
The BGTs are the real deal. Refreshing and raw, with a sometimes warped sound of soulful country/blues you might hear on a porch in the Deep South. Every song on every album is heartfelt, honest, and touching. I can't get enough of them!
I danced one night by moonlight next to water holding my then 6 year old daughter after a summer BBQ to them. She nor I will never forget it- we speak of it often and fondly. Perfect night.

One of my favorite bands. I saw them at the Black Mountain Music festival in Ashville NC a few years back. Still listen to Blue Horse on a weekly basis.

I first heard this band on RadioParadise a few years ago. I am very glad Pandora also carries them. I always stop what I am doing to 'listen' to their songs. I would love to see them live someday. St. Louis would welcome you TBGT!
