When the "Cold War" was going on I didn't want to listen to this song in case people would think that I was being unpatriotic to America. Young and dumb but a Patriot just the same.
I didn't know about the rivalry between Beatles and Beach Boys until I came here and started reading bios. It's kind of telling that it figures large in the Beach Boys' bio and doesn't rate a mention in the Beatles'.
"Back in the USSR" almost plays like a playground taunt: "Hey look at us, we're playing in your back yard!" You can sort of see why Brian Wilson lost it.
What got past a lot of listeners then and now is that this song was largely a parody of the Beach Boys, who the Beatles considered their greatest rivals in the late 1960s. Listen to it with that in mind and you can't miss it.

Love the song, but don't like the jet engine noise in the background. Whenever this song comes on in my car I get worried I have a bad belt in the engine.
Great airplane/jet opening sound effects. The song really could stand on it's own without the jet sound but it adds nicely and brings the listener into a 'silly little song' which for the Beatles was simply nothing more than 'filler' material. But even their throw-away music was as good, or better than most other's premium tracks.
