Blodwyn Pig

A quirky detour of late-'60s British progressive/blues rock, Blodwyn Pig was founded by former Jethro Tull guitarist Mick Abrahams, who left Tull after the This Was album. Abrahams was joined by bassist Andy Pyle, drummer Ron Berg, and Jack Lancaster, who gave the outfit their most distinctive colorings via his saxophone and flute. On their two albums, they explored a jazz/blues/progressive style somewhat in the mold of (unsurprisingly) Jethro Tull, but with a lighter feel. They also bore some similarities to John Mayall's jazzy late-'60s versions of the Bluesbreakers, or perhaps Colosseum, but with more eclectic material. Both of their LPs made the British Top Ten, though the players' instrumental skills were handicapped by thin vocals and erratic (though oft-imaginative) material. The group were effectively finished by Abrahams' departure after 1970's Getting to This. They briefly reunited in the mid-'70s, and Abrahams was part of a different lineup that reformed in the late '80s; they have since issued a couple of albums in the 1990s. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

I can thank DirectTV for turning me on to BP today. Channel 840 8-tracs played Dear Jill and I was hooked. Forever a fan of fusion, keep the faith.
First heard these guys in69 on late night radio out of ann arbor
San Francisco Sketches ! Fantastic how Blodwyn Pig melded jazz with rock
love dear jill
Solid group. Great music
Wow, they finally added Dear Jill. One of their best cuts. Listen to the subtle but great arrangement and musicianship . Compare it to the hack bands of today. Have people forgotten how to compose and play instruments ? Apparently so....
Solid band. Unlike the Pandora crew, i think the Pig sounds more like the Bluesbreaker s than Tull. It saddens me that fusion, which started out so well with the Bluesbreaker s , BST, Mothers of Invention, and BP, quickly devolved into crap like Chicago and Return to Forever.
The birth of Sweetmeat from K-SHE 95 in St. Louis. The nations oldest rock station, real rock radio since 1967!
The pig rules, great in the 70s, great now
We just added Drive Me to our set list in our band. Great tune!
The original album cover was white background with a Pig with a roach...

Love this album but its missing "Walk on the Water" which was on the original LP. The cover is different too. I saw them a very long time ago in NYC. Jack Lancaster would play two Sax's at once on some songs. I was always a big fan of British blues like John Mayall, Keef Hartley, Savoy Brown and Ten Years After so these guys fit right into that.
I am in agreement with Jack Carroll (posted 2/6/09) that BP were indeed a very under-rated band. I loved them then and still do today. Abrahams still has a following in the UK and Europe and I fel it is a shame he is so unkown stateside. In addition to BP, he continues to make great recordings marketed under "The Mick Abrahams Band" and simply "Mick Abrahams." His recent recordings in the 90s and "oughts" deserve mention.
Mick Abrahams one of the true greats.
Ahh, that marvellous vibrato
so smooth
I have been looking to hear Dear Jill for 25 years
This is a VERY under-rated band, IMHO. Check 'em out!
