Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. After a period with Sarah Vaughan (1965-1968), he became a studio musician, and by 1973 was arranging and working as a producer for CTI. In 1974, James recorded his first purely commercial effort as a leader; he later made big-selling albums for his own Tappan Zee label, Columbia, and Warner Bros., including collaborations with Earl Klugh and David Sanborn. James remains relatively busy in the studio and since 2000 has released several albums including Dancing on the Water in 2001, That Steamin' Feelin' in 2002, Hi-Fi in 2003, and Urban Flamingo in 2006, among others. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Bob James is Bob James..all his own style.Another reason i listen to jazz.Still don't understand why so many stations are disappearing from the airwaves.I CAN'T find any reason for it(music is not offensive, rude nor grating...ITS QUITE THE OPPOSITE) it put me in a very great mood and gives you a positive feel-good feeling.Would really like to know whats REALLY going on with that.Seriously! Let's keep jazz alive and well on the airwaves!!!!
Thanks for years of good music. I grew up with music

Bob James-the reason I developed love for jazz and it just expanded from there. Even sounded awesome on 8-tracks. Genius can't be hidden or disguised and genius is Bob James
This site has shown an extremely narrow view of what Bob James has done both in terms of his huge discography and his leading of the all-star group Fourplay. This man is so much more than a studio musician.... arranger, composer, producer, keyboard player..... what an amazing talent!

I first noticed Bob James in 1968, at UCLA as a pre-med. A student in my dorm showed me his BJ1 and BJ2 LPs. I sure liked B.James piano style. Been getting his albums ever since. Great variety...just sticks to ya, and stays with ya.

The first time I heard Bob James was in a Student Union between classes , 27 years ago. I was sitting there having a cup of coffee and trying to find my mind , when somebody started playing the Double Vision album.....i couldn't move until the whole album was finished ...neddless to say I missed class , but my music appreciation went to a whole new level and has not stopped since. I'm not sure where music was invented , but is is for the Soul.....
If you don't know who this is... one word.....Nautilus. Nas "I could make a whole album just by sampling different parts of Nautilus." Bob James has recorded some of the funkiest music ever made.
I've heard his music since I was 8/9 yrs old. I used to go to my uncles room and listen to his reel-to-reel! Anybody remember those! Well, Mr. James sounded very good on those..and 8-tracks!!!! LOL!!!!!
