Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. After a period with Sarah Vaughan (1965-1968), he became a studio musician, and by 1973 was arranging and working as a producer for CTI. In 1974, James recorded his first purely commercial effort as a leader; he later made big-selling albums for his own Tappan Zee label, Columbia, and Warner Bros., including collaborations with Earl Klugh and David Sanborn. James remains relatively busy in the studio and since 2000 has released several albums including Dancing on the Water in 2001, That Steamin' Feelin' in 2002, Hi-Fi in 2003, and Urban Flamingo in 2006, among others. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
While James is on one of the original founders of SJ..(…if it can be said to have a beginning)…he has never stopped innovating during his more than 40 year professional career. His musical curiosity and innovation has never ceased. I can honestly say I have never heard a tune of his that I do not enjoy listening to.

One of the first jazz artist I listen to and migrating over to Jazz and underground music. The KFRC top 40s made me totally sick that caused my migration and glad I did.

Bob James keeps the music coming. I got a taste of it in 1969, when a student at college lend me Bob James 1, and Bob James 2 LPS... have gone through most of his works, and when he is in town with a concert. His music just lasts and lasts. It would be nice to see those old LPs digitized. Funny, Scott did not mentioned them in the Bio. (maybe he was not around then, ha ha.

Bob James is Bob James..all his own style.Another reason i listen to jazz.Still don't understand why so many stations are disappearing from the airwaves.I CAN'T find any reason for it(music is not offensive, rude nor grating...ITS QUITE THE OPPOSITE) it put me in a very great mood and gives you a positive feel-good feeling.Would really like to know whats REALLY going on with that.Seriously! Let's keep jazz alive and well on the airwaves!!!!
Thanks for years of good music. I grew up with music

Bob James-the reason I developed love for jazz and it just expanded from there. Even sounded awesome on 8-tracks. Genius can't be hidden or disguised and genius is Bob James
This site has shown an extremely narrow view of what Bob James has done both in terms of his huge discography and his leading of the all-star group Fourplay. This man is so much more than a studio musician.... arranger, composer, producer, keyboard player..... what an amazing talent!
