Bob James

Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going in a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. After a period with Sarah Vaughan (1965-1968), he became a studio musician, and by 1973 was arranging and working as a producer for CTI. In 1974, James recorded his first purely commercial effort as a leader; he later made big-selling albums for his own Tappan Zee label, Columbia, and Warner Bros., including collaborations with Earl Klugh and David Sanborn. James remains relatively busy in the studio and since 2000 has released several albums including Dancing on the Water in 2001, That Steamin' Feelin' in 2002, Hi-Fi in 2003, and Urban Flamingo in 2006, among others. In 2011, James paired with pianist Keiko Matsui for Altair & Vega. Two years later, he delivered his second collaboration with saxophonist David Sanborn, 2013's Quartette Humaine. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

I cannot believe that Bob James's contribution to the hip-hop genre was not mentioned in his bio. He is certainly one of the most sampled artists in hip-hop history. That is definitely noteworthy, to say the least.

I'm sorry but didn't Bob James and Janet Jackson collaborate on a toon called (Making Love in the Rain)?
Bob...you are definitely smooth. Taking it back!!!
Bob james3,4&coo l with Earl klugh simply COOL!!!
Being from NY...& specifically , Westchester; to me, Bob James really defined the sounds of this area during the 70's & early 80's--with stuff like this tune, & Angela's theme (theme from 'Taxi'), etc...the incredible lush strings against (with) the keyboards & rhythm! They just don't make music like this anymore....( r e : 'Westchester Lady')

To put it in a nut shell, Bob james is the best, he is second to none,

I first heard Bob James theme song from tv show Taxi and I have found a lot of his music, jazzy, innovative and down-right rhythmatic. Makes me want to dance and at least tap my foot and/or tap out the beat with my fingers!
The first time I remember hearing Bob James was on (WHUR) Howard University Radio during their early years, the song was Feel Like Making Love on the Bob James One album and I was sold. I have never stopped listening to the guy, and he still sounds great.
Bob James....He just has this super rhythmic beat. I've been into him since BJ2. I just love that era of jazz with Her big Hancock's Chameleon, Eric Gale's Ginseng Woman, Grover Washington's , Mr Magic, Lonnie Liston Smith's Expansion, etc. There is just something about that whole sound that still gets to my soul. Since then, Bob just continues to put out great music that resonates with me and I always look forward to his new adventures!
I loved his Bob James (3) or Three, this is another music monster.
He began in my world in 1977, while in college. The cool, rich kid from So. Cal had his albums. I listened and loved the sound.
Me. Bob James can play anything for me he's the best

NO ONE except the late Grover Washington Jr. defines Smooth Jazz better. NO ONE!

It was sacrilege to discover the name Bob James is famous for a tyre mart in Australia! Unmistakable sound since the 70's and a jazz keyboard icon.
A pure genius at what he produces, the very best

Have been a fan of BJ for over 30 years. The Restless album is one of my faves. He has always had interesting collaboratio n s .
While James is on one of the original founders of SJ..(…if it can be said to have a beginning)…h e has never stopped innovating during his more than 40 year professional career. His musical curiosity and innovation has never ceased. I can honestly say I have never heard a tune of his that I do not enjoy listening to.
clintonh72
One of the first jazz artist I listen to and migrating over to Jazz and underground music. The KFRC top 40s made me totally sick that caused my migration and glad I did.

Bob James keeps the music coming. I got a taste of it in 1969, when a student at college lend me Bob James 1, and Bob James 2 LPS... have gone through most of his works, and when he is in town with a concert. His music just lasts and lasts. It would be nice to see those old LPs digitized. Funny, Scott did not mentioned them in the Bio. (maybe he was not around then, ha ha.
m.smith97
