Bobby Vee

He launched his career as a fill-in for the recently deceased Buddy Holly, Bobby Vee scored several pop hits during the early '60s, that notorious period of popular music sandwiched between the birth of rock & roll and the rise of the British Invasion. Though a few of his singles -- "Rubber Ball," for one -- were as innocuous as anything else from the era, Vee had a knack for infectious Brill Building pop, thanks to his ebullient voice as well as the cadre of songwriters standing behind him.

Born in Fargo, ND in 1943, Robert Thomas Velline was still in his teens when he formed his first combo, the Shadows, with his brother Bill and their friend Bob Korum. The trio were playing around the area when their big break came, at the expense of one of Bobby's musical idols; the Winter Dance Party package tour, with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper were on their way to Fargo when their plane went down in Iowa, killing all three. The Shadows were scheduled to play the date instead of Holly, and several months later, producer Tommy "Snuff" Garrett supervised their first recording session and the release of the single "Suzie Baby" on Soma Records. Liberty/RCA picked up the single later in the year, and though it just barely scraped the pop charts, the label kept plugging with Vee as a solo act, recording him on Adam Faith's "What Do You Want?," which also failed to move.

With the collective might of the Brill Building behind him, though, Vee was guaranteed to make it; his third single, "Devil or Angel," hit the Top Ten in mid-1960, followed by "Rubber Ball" later that year. One year later, Vee's biggest hit, "Take Good Care of My Baby," spent three weeks at number one, followed by the number two "Run to Him." His fame appeared to wane after the 1962 Top Ten single "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," due in large part to the success of the Beatles and other English acts. Vee appeared in several movies (Just for Fun, Play It Cool) and briefly tried to cash in on the British phenomenon -- with the disappointing Bobby Vee Sings the New Sound from England! -- but also recorded songs by his early influences, including Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Bobby Vee continued to chart throughout the '60s, and even hit the Top Ten again in 1967 with "Come Back When You Grow Up," but after a brief attempt at more serious recordings, he hit the rock & roll oldies circuit. ~ John Bush, Rovi

One of the first albums I owned in 1968. I had such a crush on Bobby Vee. Every time he sang My Girl I would pretend he was singing it to me.

Bobby Vee...brings back great memories. So fun to sing along with :)
When I think of the best music of my youth, Bobby Vee is right up there at the top level. I took my mom many years ago to see Bobby Vee perform at a Holiday Inn in Bethesda, MD. It was a great time. My mom is gone now, but I still have that cherished memory and Bobby Vee was part of it.

Bobby Vee, I have been accused of living in the past, but all I know is when I hear one of your songs, my life instantly gets better. The memories are sweet, but the songs are still so good. Your voice is so smooth, I had the opportunity to see you in Branson, Mo. a few years ago and you were wonderful. Please never stop singing!!
He was one of the few recording during that time that I really enjoyed His song's were played at the senior prom
I grew up with Bobby Vee singing in my transistor radio under my pillow and not many days go by without singing or humming one of his songs. My wife thinks it's funny but I enjoy the memories.

My dad got Bobby vee's greatest hits album when I was about 6-7 years old and since my dad's passing I inherited the album. It brings back very fond memories for me. Bobby Vee is one of my all time favorites.
you're up there with my all time favorites. Thanks for your music. tony.
I just saw him in concert at the Spokane County Fair on 9/14/10. He put on a great show. He is a great singer and a great showman. His son Jeff was on drums and his son Tommy was on bass and bass guitar and quite a cutup. I hadn't seen him since the early 60's. He is still one of the best.
The David Lynch in my likes this character but am I liking him sincerely that is the question I think I am just like Mr. Lynch might but I don't know if he did.
he is one great singer
music that will make you feel good. Great music will always do that to you.

reminds me of the days when life was simpler and safer-
Bobby Vee and me a 12 year old with all kinds of Teen Idol pictures on the bedroom wall - dancing in the kitchen - may not be the best singer but so many memories tied to the songs he sang Red Rubber Ball and Run to him ...
I personly do not like how he sings!
He will always be one of my favorites. Most of my great childhood memories will be tied to his songs including my first girlfriend.
Take Good Care of My Baby is a great song that will last forever. And Bobby Vee, take good care of yourself! We luv ya!!
Bobby Vee, wonderful Artist!

As noted above, Bobby Vee's real name is Robert Thomas Velline. Back in the mid-'70s Robert Thomas Velline released "Nothing Like a Sunny Day" which included remakes of one or two of the old songs. Although it has been a storage item along w/the rest of my albums since CD's came along, it remains one of my favorite LPs of all time. I haven't been able to find it on CD anywhere; none of the on-line providers carry anything but the "Bobby Vee" releases. Luckily I still have the LP; I'll copy i
He is very down to earth. My aunt is actually his very good friend and he's great to her. I've heard him play at the Iowa State Fair and a few other places. His boys are musical as well.
Bobby Vee made a lot of money bringing back the R&B songs of the fifties. I believe the Clovers were the first to record Devil or Angel. Bobby doe's the song well but not as good as the originals.
Bobby Vee is one of the best musical memories of my teen years. A great artist and a gentleman.

I saw him at a little Army base NCO club in late '68'.
He really was very gracious and put on a fantastic show!
I never forgot that. He acted like he really enjoyed being there and performing for us.
Thanks for serving the troops sir!

Bobby sang some of the catchiest tunes of the early sixties. They still sound great today!
Excellant voice from the past. I still enjoy and appreciate his music. Low profile singer who made a major impact on our lifes.
Please never play anything by this man or Pat Boone. Furthermore play the songs by the artists that them famous. For instance: afew songs back a song was played by some group yet should have been played by the Kinks.
chickysue50
Bobby Vee never got the recognition he deserved. Best voice of the 50/60's era, I think he could have sung just about any song out there.
Bobby Vee sends the "Love" message right to your solar-plexus ~ The Happiness, the Sweet disappointme n t ~I've yet to another singer to that~
The Night has a Thousand Eyes is one of my favorite songs by Mr. Vee. They should play it.
A bouncy,up-be a t genre of pop that was always a welcome note in those teenage years!
bobby vee is one of the great singer of the late 50.s and early 60.s
