Bodeans

Formed in 1984 by high school friends Sammy Llanas and Kurt Neumann, the BoDeans mixed Midwestern roots rock with elements of adult contemporary pop, fashioning a sound that earned critical acclaim during the '80s and commercial recognition during the following decade. Llanas and Neumann fronted the group by sharing vocal and guitar duties, while bassist Bob Griffin and drummer Guy Hoffman populated the rhythm section. Although based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the BoDeans began building an audience 20 miles east in Milwaukee, and their success in that town helped gain them a contract with Slash Records, with manufacturing and distribution handled by Warner Bros.

The BoDeans worked with T-Bone Burnett on their debut album, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, which appeared in 1986 to warm reviews. They recruited another big-name producer, Talking Head Jerry Harrison, to helm 1987's Outside Looking In, which found the band reduced to a trio after the departure of Hoffman. Outside Looking In broke into the Billboard Top 100, and the BoDeans grew their audience by touring alongside U2, appearing on Robbie Robertson's self-titled solo album, and receiving the honor of Best New Band by Rolling Stone magazine. By the time they released their third album, Home, in 1989, keyboardist Michael Ramos and drummer Danny Gayol had joined. This lineup stayed intact for the release of 1991's Black and White, but the BoDeans went without a drummer once again on their next recording, Go Slow Down.

Following the release of a double-disc live album, Joe Dirt Car, the band returned in 1996 with Blend. Around the time of Blend's release, "Closer to Free" -- a song that had originally appeared on 1993's Go Slow Down -- became a hit, due in large part to its exposure as the theme song for the TV show Party of Five. "Closer to Free" eventually cracked the Top 20, becoming the most successful single of the band's career. The BoDeans were arguably more popular than ever, but the band took a break during the late '90s, with both frontmen devoting time to their solo careers.

By 2004, the band had reconvened and signed with a new label, Zoe. Resolution was released that year, followed in 2005 by Homebrewed: Live from the Pabst. Griffin left the group in 2006 and was replaced by Eric Holden, who appeared on 2008's Still. By this point, the bandmates had found a new home on 429 Records, and they remained with that label for the release of Mr. Sad Clown in 2010 and Indigo Dreams in 2011, the latter of which saw the departure of Llanas, citing "differences of opinion." The band's eleventh studio album, American Made, arrived the following year. ~ William Ruhlmann & Andrew Leahey, Rovi

With or without Sammy the songs are well written and timeless. Always one of my favorites.!! ! ! ! !
Not the same without Sammy
One of my favorite all time bands. But not the same since Sammy Llanas left.
This is The Bodeans at their finest days. In my eyes the most underrated band in Rock n Roll. An American gem.

Just seen them ln Alexandria, VA ...as soon as they got on stage my wife noticed someone was missing...we had no idea Sammy left! Although Kurt and others still rocked the Birchmere, Sammy was certainly missed! Many songs he sang are favorites of ours. He made a difference in the band we loved through the 90's

Miss those years!
Love this group, Joe Dirt Car is an awesome CD
Damn i love these guys
Sorry to see Sammy go. Having that distinctive other lead singer made them sound like 2 bands in one. Nice variety.
great band nobody seems to know about

Don't know how people can say that Sammy's absence makes no difference. Say what? Love this band!
Lost nothing when Sammy left. M usically that is. Live Kurt rocks, great guitar player?, great band.
Wish the good ones could stay together forever. Something always changes though doesn't it...? Still one of my favorites after all these years. Lost track of them for a while, but was happily surprised when I found out they were still together. New music is great though. Hope Sam will work things out with the rest of the band and come back if he can. I always loved the vocal arrangements they had. Also the work they did with Robbie Robertson, years ago, was top notch too.
Was very disappointed this past weekend at Ravinia when I realized that Sam wasn't there. It's not the same without him. Not the BoDeans anymore. Hadn't realized they broke up.

Was at that same Mississippi Nights show. They rocked it!
Great Band...Liste n e d to them over and over in college, tore through multiple cassettes of Love, Hope, Sex Dreams and Outside Looking In. Went to see them at Mississipi Nights in St. Louis, MO years ago...Best concert ever been to...

Going to Waterfest in Oshkosh WI, I have seen the Bodeans many times before every show is better than the one before it!
I saw them about 2 1/2 weeks ago in Seattle, as always they put on a good show. They did a couple of songs from the new Album Indigo Dreams, and encore performance of Fadeaway. It was pretty cool!

Pandora doesn't show the Acoustic CD you can get from the BoDeans website. That CD is awesome.

mbclemens60
The best band on our fair planet!! I saw them one of the many x's in the Motor City and Sheryl Crow opened up for them, (me and <1000 other folks) I still have the cassette tape they passed out @ the front door of S. cdkester
I have seen them live 3 times now, and they are the only band I have ever seen that sound better live than in the studio. They put incredible energy into their shows.
Seen the Bodeans several times live. Can't get enough. Don't see them around as much anymore. Sams voice is awesome..... . . . . y a - y a - y a .
odildelta98
their songs became the sountrack of my college years
They opened for U2 in Kansas City when they were touring for their Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum albums. Something about them has stuck with me ever since. They make wonderful rock music. Yes, rock can sound like country a little since country music is part of rock 'n roll. I wish they had gotten more airtime on the radio.
VERY GOOD.......
selly1976
One of their voices sounds just like Jon Bon Jovi
'Love/Hope/S e x / D r e a m s ' really is a brilliant album.
The BoDeans were excellent. The Joliet show was very much fun (Rialto in Joliet is a really good concert venue)! I can see why they have such a devoted following. Would have liked more songs off of "Still" but will definitely see them again
