Boney James & Rick Braun

A solid saxophonist whose style falls on the R&B-ish and pop side of jazz, Boney James (who is heavily influenced by Grover Washington Jr.) is a consistent best-seller who can always be relied upon to put on a colorful live show. Born James Oppenheim, he grew up in New Rochelle, New York. The future Boney James studied clarinet when he was eight, switching to saxophone two years later. When he was 15, his family moved to Los Angeles. James was soon playing in a fusion band (Line One) that was strong enough to open for Flora Purim and the Yellowjackets. After a year attending UC Berkeley, he transferred to UCLA so he could continue playing with the band. He earned a degree in history but became a full-time musician after graduation, doubling on keyboards. James went on the road as a keyboardist with Morris Day in 1985 and eventually convinced Day that he should be playing saxophone instead. He spent four years with Day and became an in-demand guest musician on tenor, alto, soprano, and flute, playing with Randy Crawford, Sheena Easton, the Isley Brothers, Bobby Caldwell, and others.

He picked up his nickname while on tour with Crawford. After mentioning to a keyboardist that he was running out of food money, the musician replied that if he ate any less, he would have to be called Boney James. The popular saxophonist made his debut as a leader with Trust in 1992 (Spindletop) and then in 1994 was signed by Warner Bros., where he recorded dates including Backbone, Seduction, Boney's Funky Christmas, Sweet Thing, Shake It Up, Ride, and Pure. In 2006, Boney made the move to Concord Records and released Shine. Send One Your Love followed in 2009. In 2010, while driving home after an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival, James was rear-ended by another vehicle. The accident totaled James' car and left him with a fractured jaw and two missing teeth -- injuries that could have ended his playing career. James recuperated, and in 2011 he released Contact, an album whose title refers to the profound effect the accident had on his life and career. James re-signed with Concord in 2012. In the early spring of 2013, he released The Beat, an album that combined his love of R&B and Latin music. The set included guest appearances from Raheem DeVaughn and Floacist. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

...seen both of them before they collaborated ( s p ) together at Ala Carte Ala Park in SF ...KKSF 103.7 to all of you old timers out there....wha t a show.......R i c k would be sitting in the center with the sound guys(middle of the crowd) and they would intro him and the band starts and Rick would stand up and start....eve r y o n e would look around and see him playin' and coming up to the stage...what an entrance.... . .
This version sounds alright...my preference will always be the original version by Hugh Maskella.. Boney and Rick are cool.

I was introduced to the music of Boney James some years ago while residing in Dallas,Texas . There was a 2level music store known at that time as Tower Records. Boy do I miss shopping at stores like that. While searching for new jazz, a store clerk there asked if I had ever heard of the artist. Well after listening to the Boney James/ BoneyJames album for the 1st time, Ive been impressed with well known SaxOPHONist ever since. He Is AWESOME!!!!! Najee is my other favorite artist.

What an album! Boney James is flat out The Man on the sax! I like Braun too, and they play off each other very well. Try to listen to this album and remain in a bad mood; it's hard to do.
Beats the hell out of Lady GAGA

I really like when they re-mix old songs. Brings back good memories, but with a new twist.
Oh yeah BJ, I'm diggin it!!! I'd RSVP to you any day! ;)
This song reminds me of my high school days. Before I enlisted in the military for Vietnam. Those were fun days.

I dig Rick Braun's sound. He's not an out standing trumpet player, but he always seems to play with a crisp clean sound.
Pure magic is what I think about Boney James! Can you imagine life without his music? I can't!!
unbeleivable awsome smooth thats what i like
Boney James has seen me through some very trying times with his great music and beat, no one is more consistently smooth...

I really enjoy jazz, because it is soothing for the soul and the mind.
Bridging the gap between neo-soul and jazz ! Gotta give it up...good stuff !Exposure to Flora Purim didn't hurt. Flow on....

Just saw Boney here in Sacramento three weeks ago...what a performance! Sacramento loves him, he packs the house every time. Have all of his CDs...His soulful sound can't be matched
Why is "Shake It Up" the only CD in the discography? WTF pandora???

Boney James is the MAN! He made me forget about other sax players such as, Kenny G, Paul Taylor & Jonathan Butler who are all good musicians in their own right, but Boney is the man with the meat for the beat.
I had the pleasure of seeing BoneyJames in concert while we were in Estes Park, Colorado visitng and he was playing at the Jazz Festival in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past spring 2008. He rocked the house and had the crowd shaking and groving. We whole hardly, knew all his R&B-ish and pop side of jazz music that he so amazingly performed at this concert. He is one of "my" top artists that I listen to on a daily basis. His music puts me in a calm, spiritual state. Sit back and enjoy Boney J
