Less a band than an assemblage of some of Cuba's most renowned musical forces, Buena Vista Social Club's origins lie with noted American guitarist Ry Cooder, who in 1996 traveled to Havana to seek out a number of legendary local musicians whose performing careers largely ended decades earlier with the rise of Fidel Castro. Recruiting the long-forgotten likes of singer Ibrahim Ferrer, guitarists/singers Compay Segundo and Eliades Ochoa, and pianist Rubén González, Cooder entered Havana's Egrem Studios to record the album Buena Vista Social Club; the project was an unexpected commercial and critical smash, earning a Grammy and becoming the best-selling release of Cooder's long career. In 1998 he returned to Havana with percussionist son Joaquim to record a solo LP with Ferrer; the sessions were captured on film by director Wim Wenders, who also documented sell-out Buena Vista Social Club live performances in Amsterdam and New York City. (Wenders' film, also titled simply Buena Vista Social Club, earned an Academy Award nomination in 2000.) The public's continued interest in Cuban music subsequently generated solo efforts from Segundo and González as well as a series of international live performances promoted under the Buena Vista Social Club aegis. A concert CD, At Carnegie Hall, drawn from the same triumphant show that Wenders featured in his documentary, was released in 2008. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
The old school recording techniques makes this album an incredible production. Back ground echoes every body recording at the same time and room. A master piece!
Born here in N.Y.C., to Cuban Grand Parents, and second generation mother, raised here from the age of 11, I can only dream of what the beautiful island of Cuba is really like, and fantasize of it's life style. Pictures on the internet, stories from my parents hardly express all that is Cuba. One day, however, I will return there in honor of my parents, and honor Cuba for all she is. A paradise... God Given! Play on my brothers, play the music that touches all our hearts.
This son is one of the prettiest and most heart wrenching songs to me. Sooo remind me of my grandparents and parents who were born in Cuba!! With all the monstrosities going on right now with Castro and his Communist ways, sadly I will not be able to go visit their home land. I pray that God will restore it to it's Glory as it was when Hemingway wrote about it being the pearl of all isles....if anyone has not seen the movie Buena Vista Social Club, please check it out..it's AMAZING!!!
Esta composicion tiene que estar en el panteon de la musica clasica al lado de los clasicos Mozart, Bethoven y Cia

How cool! I am so lucky to have been exposed to this musical treat. I'm sure that our parents felt the same and were honored to have (perhaps) even seen these and similar artists perform back then. Thanks Pandora for bringing this station to us all.
to below... Thats awesome. Not just wiring the sound, haha thats cool, but that you raise youre children to real beutiful unheard of on the radio or your top forty radio music. Its funny how the best music is oftn not whats on the radio comonly but whats more underground and passed on from older to younger or friend to friend, exploring Pandora ect. Stay open, Listen clearly, fill your soul and jus roll to the sounds that flow and make you lose yourself in the music it self. Music can take you a
I've wired my house with sound just so I can play this station (on pandora) on Saturday mornings. it reminds me of my mother's routine in Miami growing up. My kids now 13 and 16 love it.
This music reminds me so much of my Dad, gone 17 yrs now, who was born in 1921 and lived in the midst of this amazing music culture. It is so heartbreakingly beautiful, it makes me cry and makes my heart ache. I am so proud to be Cuban-American!

Omahra Portuondo para mi la mejor me encanta, sobre todo Veinte Años
I love this music!!! I saw them on TV and have not been able to get them out of my mind. I am so glad Pandora has them available BUT I don't like that they mix in other artists. I created a station for them but have only heard one of their songs. So, so disappointed. Still, it was wonderful to hear that one song of theirs. I love their music. I guess the only way to hear ONLY the music of BVSC is to buy their CD or the DVD.
The magic in the music by these men is astounding to remind us of who we are.

This type of music brings back wonderful memories of my parents and what they listened to. Amazing the technology these days that affords such great music being available. Congratulations on bringing such fabulous information and music to us. Thanks Elsie Aponte, Florida
the Western hempishere totally rocks - Cuban, salsa, rumba, tango, dixie, cha cha, blues, jazz, calipso, meriachi, rock and roll, sychopation, ska, Tin pan alley, Nashville, John Glass and John Phillip Sousa, too?! How many different musical genres the "New World " spawned on the last century. It's seriously amazing.

son los reyes! Yo ví la pelicula durante un vuelo de estados unidos hacia Quito Ecuador donde estaba viviendo. Compré el disco inmediatemente en el aeropuerto en Quito!
I fell in love with them in the 8th grade and I still love listening to them now. If you don't own BVSC at Carnegie Hall, you need to buy it. The rhythms and vocals of this cd are smooth and sensual.
I'm a Gringo, but I love Salsa and Latin music. When I discovered the Buena Vista Social Club it was like a history lesson about the music I loved.

I also think of my grandparents when I hear this music. I remember going to reunion dances of the town they were from in Cuba as a little girl. Standing on my grandparents feet as they taught me to dance. This music makes me think of the old movies of Cuba from the 30's and 40's. What it must've been like to see those elegant parties and dances my grandparents attended in their youth. I can only imagine.
