California Guitar Trio

The California Guitar Trio consists of three musicians who are not necessarily California-bred; Bert Lams is from Belgium, Hideyo Moriya hails from Japan, and Paul Richards is the only native of the U.S. The three first crossed paths at a guitar seminar held at Robert Fripp's home in England in the late '80s. Lams, Moriya, and Richards toured the U.S. and England as part of Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists until deciding to branch out on their own in the fall of 1990.

The band officially became the California Guitar Trio in February of 1991, after relocating due to the fact that Lams was getting married and was moving there anyway. By starting out playing small clubs and coffeehouses on the West Coast, the group soon became well-known in guitar playing circles, thanks also to their Fripp/King Crimson connection. They were eventually signed to the Fripp/Crimson label Discipline Global Mobile, releasing 1994's Yamanashi Blues and 1995's Invitation. The group has toured intensely ever since their debut, opening for King Crimson, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp (solo and with his Robert Fripp String Quintet), and John McLaughlin, as well as headlining shows themselves; Pathways followed in 1998, and two years later the group resurfaced with Rocks the West. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

People here are commenting on different songs by the same group. I am coming here from Walk Don't Run, originally by the Ventures. Someone else is obviously coming here from Sleepwalk, by Santo and Johnny. Why would they direct the different comments to the same page, I wonder.

Got to see them live at a little music festival in Eugene, Oregon many years ago, maybe 1996 or 97, and never forgot it. Forgot what year it was, but never forgot that amazing concert!

Now I got the impression they met Robert Fripp at Guitar Craft, Charles Town W VA which is why they play at a church in Frederick, Md which was the 'big' city nearby.

I saw them at a very small venue on the Oregon Coast. I couldn't believe the quality of their playing. The tickets were only $18 and should have been much more. Unfortunatel y , the there wasn't a full audience so they probably won't come back. What a shame, but what a special treat for me!!

I saw them live.. and believe me, you should see them live too! Nothing like I have ever experienced. . purchase their CDs too

Following Charle's comment. I too first saw them openning for King Crimson, but in Orlando, we all saw three ordinary looking guys come on stage with their acoustic guitars and we all thought to ourselves who are these guys, they can't be much, but within two songs we were beside ourselves with the talent they showed. I felt sorry for King Crimson. I don't know any group who would want to follow them. I went to see King Crimson, but they were such a letdown after hearing CCG. I was a Califor

Anyone who has seen Bert, Hideyo, and Paul know they are ranked up there as the best guitarists out there. If you haven't seen them, Make every effort to do so. You won't only be amazed, but you will leave with the feeling you have just witnessed one of the best perfomances you will ever see. Their music is grace and joy all in one .

Had a trip to Denver planned to see my sis and found out they are playing there end of October! Can't wait. First heard of them when Tony Levin started 'hanging out' with the band.

great band - superb live musicians. What's intersting is their range of covers - everything from 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to 'Tubular Bells', to Pink Floyd's 'Meddle' to 'Misirilou'. Amazing and innovative arrangements - each time you come away with a new view of the original music. But I love the fact their own compositions are up there standing beside the covers, intricate, memorable and sometimes frankly beautiful... They enjoy their music - that's evident. Don't miss them.
