Captain Beyond was a rock group formed in Los Angeles in 1972 by ex-members of other prominent groups. Singer Rod Evans (b. January 19, 1947, Slough, Berkshire, England) had been with Deep Purple; drummer Bobby Caldwell had worked with Johnny Winter; and guitarist Larry Rheinhart (b. July 7, 1948, Florida) and Lee Dorman (b. September 15, 1945, St. Louis, MO, d. December 21, 2012, Laguna Niguel, CA) had been in Iron Butterfly. This lineup made their self-titled debut album for the Southern rock label Capricorn in 1972, after which Caldwell was replaced by Marty Rodriguez for their second album, Sufficiently Breathless (1973). Captain Beyond became inactive following the departure of Evans, but it was reorganized in 1976. Caldwell returned, and Willy Daffern was added as vocalist for Captain Beyond's third album, Dawn Explosion (1977), recorded for Warner Bros. Dawn Explosion was Captain Beyond's final effort. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Honestly, if I could form a band and play the first two records I would die a happy man. These cats were great musicians. Try and track the family tree for these guys. Deep Purple, Edgar & Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray, Rick Derringer, Cactus, Armageddon and the Allman Brothers to name a few. Love these guys.
I am a huge fan of their first album, it is one of my all time favorites. I was never able to get into most of their later work though, major change in style. I still regret that I missed a concert they did where I was going to college at the time.

I fell in love with Captain Beyond when I heard their first album. I guess that would have been 1971?
I was buying a stereo system and the salesman put the first album on. I bought the stereo system. Then I went and bought the album!
After 40 years it still amazes me.
The only problem that I think Captain Beyond had when playing LIVE was that they overdubbed so much when recording In Studio, and only had four musicians to try to play all of that music for the crowds.
Capricorn did not know how to promote Captain Beyond, because the band did not fall into any catagory. If you think you know alot about 70's heavier rock music and never listen to Captain Beyond, you missed the boat. You can still get on board. Happy hunting. KEEP ON ROCKIN
All part of that time when Rock and roll was growing up and spreading its wings. Never heard these guys, but had I heard them back in the day, I'd have been impressed. This particular tune sort of reminds me of Santana c*m moody blues.
Great space band, try listening straight with your eyes closed in a rocking chair. There are quite a few albums to be found in used record shops and perhaps elsewhere.
I think that this was the most original Band/Music for its time. The first album was and still is my favorite all time album. This is Progressive Rock at its finest. Caldwell kicks a** and takes no prisoners. The word here is; "Timeless".
The first album is oozing with great drums all over it, and the second one is quite different, probably because Bobby Caldwell didn't write or play on it, but still very good.

I saw these guys live in 1972 and it is still one of the most memorable concerts I ever attended..I was physically exhausted when it was over.....Trapeze was the lead in band
This is THE album ? CD I would take on the proverbial island. It blew my socks off the first time I heard it and still does.

First two records were great. Complex changes without the arrogance. Bit of Trivia. On Sufficiently Breathless, the keyboard player is Reese Wynans who was part of Stevie Ray Vaughn's Double Trouble.

you have to have the original capt album though, that was the definitive release

Best band ever. (at least in regards to the first two albums shown here)
I remember the second album had a holographic cover....the old, crude attempt at making it 3D!!! Greta band...glad I found them on Pandora....now if I can find them on ITunes!!!
Guys and girls who know good music when you hear it : Amazon .com has all these albums and more. I like the first album and Dawn Explosian. Why? because Bobby Caldwell was the drummer on these two albums and it shows. He produced and wrote much of the first album. Top 10 rock group in my opinion.
Have been a huge CB fan since day one. Anyone looking for a similar artist of a more recent vintage could draw a straight line to King's X. Particularly "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska". Would be very interested to know if Ty and the boys were indeed influenced by CB!
1st albumn was awesome. other 2 not as good but still better than most crap they claim is music today. i have all 3 on albumn and the 1st one on CD. i havent been able to find the other 2 on CD. im in the process of recording my albumns onto CD's. Only way ill have them. i cant find most onCD. even on here, theres alot that i search for that are not found. Bands like "Hard Stuff" - "Nutz" - "Stray Dog" - "Angel"- "Five Dollar Shoes" - "Moxie" to name a few. Anyone know a place to find these ra
Dr. Avatar. I agree. My pals and I found this band in the 70s and were instant fans...it was played at all our parties. However, few ever heard of them. We only saw two albums. My ex ended up with mine too and also a waste. Dr.V thanks for info on rare CB albums, the hunt is ON.
I was rock'in to Captain beyond in the early 70's, just look'in for some good music to party to, I did own two of thier albums, but the ex ended up with them. what a shame, because she's about as musical as a terd. party on people because they don't make'm like they used to.

Awesome, Awesome band! I would love the opportunity to have/hear album sides or even whole album stations here.
wheres their third album "Dawn Explosion". Their most underrated album. Its sales stats were weak, so maybe its a rare album...? Also, they have a live album from 72 that got issued in 2002. Why am I writing this here, I don't know....
