Carlos Chávez (1899-1978) was the composer who first put Mexico on the map in the international concert scene. Establishing his reputation with the orchestral Horsepower Suite (1926), Chávez hit his stride in the 1930s with works such as Sinfonía de Antigona (1933), Sinfonía India (1936), Xochipili (1940), Toccata for Percussion (1942), and the ballet Dark Meadow (1943), premiered along with Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring. Chávez's music is rich with Mexican folk motifs, palpitating percussion, and "imagined Aztec music"; his percussion works are central to the literature.
