The Cascades

An intriguing vocal group from San Diego, the Cascades sang in a light, pop-oriented style, but managed a Top Ten R&B hit in 1963, "Rhythm of the Rain" on Valiant. It was written by guitarist/lead singer John Gummoe, who joined fellow vocalists Eddie Snyder, David Stevens, David Wilson, and David Zabo. They also became a major attraction in England and Australia. They followed "Rhythm of the Rain" with "Shy Girl" and "Last Leaf," but neither duplicated their earlier success. "My First Day Alone" flopped, and the group moved to RCA. But they never again scored a hit, despite recording for Charter, Liberty, Arwin, Smash, Probe, UNI, London, and Can Base. They continued until the early '70s. ~ Ron Wynn

Yes, Ricky Nelson did a cover of this song. The vocal range and style are very similar and back then, singers who sang someone else's song would try to stay true to the music as written. It was more about vocal and music talent, not complete individualit y , although there are some individual differences. Since their voices were so similar it is hard to discern.

For real, I lived near the group practice garage. I wished they did go further. This song brings back a time when it was not to complicated, that all changed when I went to Vietnam for 2 tours. Yikes anyway!!

One of the best oldies 1963 high school days!

Without a doubt, a pop classic. Excellent arrangement and vocals, all the right ingredients for a AM radio hit in the early 60's.

This is such a good record. John Gummoe's singing is wonderful on Rhythm of the Rain. This does sound a lot like Ricky Nelson. Unfathomable that with such a great sound they only had the one big hit. Seriously.

The lead singer John Gummoe is still singing. Saw him sing in June of 2015 at a restaurant/b a r in Hollywood. Still very good. Nice fellow. Hope to see again.

I love the Cascades, & I especially love Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain, cuz how many of us have done "just that". I can just close my eyes and drift off into the many, many times I have gotten lost into just listening to the mellow raindrops.

Sweet music seen them in 1970 they were great! If we had music like that now the world would be a better place!

Saw them perform in a San Diego bowling alley club 1973. There was a loyal local following and I was amazed to see a. group that had a hit performing in such a venue.

Holy god. This one song explains how my relationship ended. She just left me. Didn't say why or nothing. I loved her and she left and took my heart with her. God bless these songs

Did not grow up in this era, but god this is good!

The Cascades are now inactive, as I understand it, but John Gummoe is still going strong. The Cascades always had a huge following in the Philipines, and he goes and tours there every so often. His voice is great for a guy in his 70's, he still sounds much the same.
