The Cat Empire

Combining a number of styles -- from funk to jazz to ska -- Melbourne, Australia's Cat Empire formed in 1999 as a trio. Keyboardist Oliver McGill, double bassist Ryan Monro, and percussionist Felix Riebl were eventually joined by trumpet player Harry James Angus, drummer Will Hull-Brown, and DJ Jamshid Khadiwala. A single and a live EP preceded the band's first album, The Cat Empire, which was released in 2003. At that point, they had already played the Melbourne Festival, the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and WOMAD. Two Shoes, their second album, was recorded in Havana, Cuba, and released in 2005. Cities followed a year later but it was 2007’s So Many Nights that, for many, crystallized their frenetic, fun-loving and party-focused sound. Although 2008 was a quiet year for the band, Live on Earth appeared in 2009, bringing together a number of their favorite onstage recordings. Their 2010 studio album, Cinema, was as widely acclaimed as So Many Nights, but betrayed an increasingly restrained and mature take on the Cat Empire sound. Next, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their first gig, in 2011 the band returned to the small Australian venues that had played host to their initial forays into live performance. By the end of the year, they had also completed an extensive tour of Europe and North America. Throughout the course of their career, the band's members were involved in numerous outside recording and performing projects, including the hip-hop outfit Jackson Jackson and the jazz quartet, The Conglomerate.~ Andy Kellman & James Wilkinson, Rovi

My favourite band in the whole entire word!!!!!
To have jazz, funk, ska and hip hop sounds but still remain accessible to the mainstream by staying entertaining and even party-worthy AND combine it all very successfully AND with a sound that, as Melody said, isn't already in every single gig is an awesome achievement that is being ignored by far too many people! The Cat Empire are absolute legends.
That is real fresh music, they really produce music that isn't already swarming around. I truly love these guys. Thank you sooo much Cat Empire

Tour dates announced in the states! Yes!!! Finally get to see my favorite band live! I cannot wait. Just have to figure out which shows I will attend!
I love these guys, I will finally get to see them in Canada!
I saw them live by accident, in a park in Boston, a few years ago--my friend and I thought someone's boombox had super-high fidelity until we saw the stage, and we were absolutely psyched!

The Cat Empire will take you around the world in 30 seconds OR LESS!! Best. Live. Show. EVAR!! I wish they would tour the U.S. more extensively. I have seen them 3 times in Cali. Once in LA back in 2010, and did a two show stint this year in LA and San Diego. If they toured more, I'd follow these dudes. Musical geniuses! Fun as hell!
saw these guys in Seattle with a friend had no idea what i was in for. These guys rocked the house.
the night that never end is probably the only ten minute song that's worth listening all the way through. these guys are great (at least for ten minutes)

Heard them first in Melbourne in 2005. Missed out on a live show while there and still kicking myself. Seen them since twice in Seattle and once in Vancouver. The recorded stuff is great, but the live show is even better.
