Catamenia

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Amorphis, Impaled Nazarene, and Sentenced, to name but a few, Finland became a surprising hotbed of heavy metal talent during the late '90s, and symphonic black metal act Catamenia certainly ranks among the most consistent -- if not commercially successful -- of these. Formed in 1995 by vocalist Mika Tönning, guitarists Riku Hopeakoski and Sampo Ukkola, bassist Timo Lehtinen, keyboardist Heidi Riihinen, and drummer Toni Tervoand, and hailing from Sentenced's hometown of Oulu, Catamenia needed only a few well-recorded demos to score a deal with Massacre Records, for which they delivered 1998's Halls of Frozen North and 1999's Morning Crimson in quick succession.

Although both of these albums displayed a large inspirational debt to Norwegians Emperor, they were also creative and inspired enough in their own right, and despite recurring obsessions with frigid album titles and blue cover artwork, Catamenia's sound would grow ever more varied and distinctive with each ensuing release. These included 2000's excellent Eternal Winter's Prophecy (which saw Ukkola replaced by new rhythm guitarist Ari Nissilä and the Black League's Sir Luttinen helping out behind the drum kit) and 2001's epic masterpiece Eskhata (which borrowed Kalmah drummer Janne Kusmin, and did without departed keyboardist Riihinen). The behind-the-scenes shuffling would continue with the arrival of keyboardist Tero Nevala and drummer Viekko Jumisko prior to the band's fifth album, 2003's acclaimed Chaos Born. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

the park of oulu tells all
wait are you serious morbid angel, I hope not, much better catamenia albums and songs, check out first album... and black metal with black lace and naked chicks? goes hand in hand
Oh Hell to the Yes! Just heard Location Cold and its Badass! Checking out these guys sometime.
Demons and chicks with black lace? I have never heard that in black metal before...
@Randi Michelle Ruhn
....Really/ I am a recent Christian, and my taste for music has not changed. The only difference in my lifestyle is that I no longer listen to or write anti-religio u s vocals. Metal is about the music, not demons f***ing chicks in black lace or whatever.
well said @Andrew J Owens
... that chick has really small boobs :'(
Well s**t on me, I've really taken a liking to this band. If this means I have to turn in my grim und kvlt card into the local black metal authority, I'll have to do just that. These guys are really good.
they suck
Sounds like a bat with a sore throat screaming in agony.
Poor little critter.
hey leave the poor christians alone, they like death metal or black metal as the next metal head but they stick to their christian roots, there's also jewish metal(Daath) based on the kabala and there's bands from israel but that doesn't exactly make them jewish. just trying to say the only thing that matters in metal is the music and how creatively you portray it.
Christians have a lot to be dark about, since they have killed more people than any other group in the history of man (who evolved from monkeys)
holy cr@p...the christians can leave the black metal to those of us who delight in hedonistic pleasures such as demons f**king chicks in black lace and a cold moonlit mountainous landscape! stick to your amy grant and country music! pffffffffttt t t t t
Somebody is calling for... dark Christian bands?
What exactly do Christians have to be dark about?
Sounds pretty good. I can definitely see the Emperor influence in the vocal style.
Or.. How about the drop this silly religious bull s**t and focus more on stepping above religion and believing in yourself instead of a fairytale... .
i like the darkness in this band i like this band but as i have been listening to bands of the dark arts i have been thinking we need more christian bands of this genere that are dark in sound and of the dark arts in sound but holy in priase and worship to jesus christ in lyrics and what they sing in love blackmetal forever rock on.
i still love this band blackmetal deathcore metal rapmetal sleez rock or glam metal and juggalo music are my all time favorites and becuase this band keeps it interesting and intovating they are a good blackmetal band rock on all things black for life rock on.
i love this band black metal forever all things black this band rocks rock on.
kamronkhan
amazing stuff
Catamenia just super. My metal universe just keeps expanding. love it.
Now on to the next galaxy.
You can always count on the Scandinavian stuff.
i'm listenin to expect no mercy rite now...it's kind of lame but i like it anyway :D
I'm never dissapointed when a Catamenia song comes up. Sure it's about as generic as black metal gets, but it's a good generic, and they utilize the keyboards that I love so much in my black metal.
Catamenia rocks.
I only heard half of a song(gates of anubis) because I muted an ad and then I had to take a phone call and forgot to un-mute it, but that was the most intense half of a song I've ever heard.
mealey85
This band is sick, but Kalmah is the shiz.
praetorian_l y c a n t h r o p e
my favorite Finish band is definitely Ajattara. But Kalmah, Catamenia old COB-HC are also amazing
Yeah, Finnish and Swedish are the best
Basically if your a finnish metal band your badass there alwyas good... but i agree with kepy Kalmah rules finnish metal
Good stuff! But Kalmah rule finnish metal! Example: The Black Waltz. Check it out!
they remind me of the earlier stuff by Dimmu, when they were still black-metal. . . fast, shrieking vocals, corny "creepy" keyboards... not bad, sort of nostalgic in a way...
in words of the great pantera, f***in badass!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
let_no_tyran t s _ r e a p
Brilliant! It's rare for me to be at a loss for words, but f**king hell! Go Finland! I mean, as if f**king CMX wasn't proof enough.
damn f**king awesome band first time i've heard them. badass.
Hey, I just got started on commenting. I've listened for nearly 2 years. I am still working on tolerance for scream-o vocals. Otherwise, I rank them right up there.
GREAT BAND WHY AM I ALWAYS FIRST TO COMMENT ON AWESOME BANDS LIKE THIS!
