The Cathedrals (CCM)

Formed in 1964, this traditional Southern gospel vocal group (also known as the Cathedral Quartet) appeared regularly on Rex Humbard's Cathedral of Tomorrow broadcast in the '60s. The Cathedrals were led by bass George Younce and alto Glen Payne, known for their humorous onstage exchanges. Originally, Humbard formed the group as a trio, but they soon became a quartet comprising Payne, Younce, Danny Koker and Bobby Clark. Both Payne and Younce remained with the group since its inception; the other two spots have been filled by a number of singers. By 1994, the lineup stabilized with Ernie Haase and Scott Fowler on tenor and baritone vocals, respectively, and pianist Roger Bennett.

The Cathedral Quartet appeared on Humbard's show until 1969 and then set out on their own, traveling from gig to gig in a converted egg truck until they could afford real tour buses. Over the next decade, the group became one of the most popular Southern gospel groups around. In 1977, they won their first Grammy for Best Gospel Performance, and duplicated the feat in 1978, 1979, and 1982 as well. In 1977, they also won Dove Awards for Male Group of the Year and Best Southern Gospel Album (for Then...And Now) by the Gospel Music Association. In 1979, Koker and Clark left the group, beginning a long stream of replacements; Roger Bennett also joined up at this point.

During the '70s and '80s, the Cathedrals had a long stream of number one gospel hits that included "Step Into the Water," "Can He, Could He, Would He," and "I've Just Started Living." From 1986 through 1990, the Cathedrals were featured at Bill Gaither's Praise Gathering for Believers, and continued to garner numerous awards from the GMA. In 1988, they became the first Southern gospel group to record in England with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for the album Symphony of Praise. In 1989, the group's 25th anniversary, the Gospel Music Voice named them Group of the Year, and Cash Box named Goin' in Style Southern Gospel Album of the Year. The Cathedrals continued to tour extensively in large churches and concert halls, although Payne's death on October 15, 1999 effectively cast that year's tour as their farewell. ~ Sandra Brennan

I have been a believer in the message of the Cathedrals music and all the Gospel singers and groups who bring comfort and worship to us all since 1964, I was 13 at the time. Now I'm 64 and still cannot get enough of listening to George Younce, Glen Payne, Ernie Haase, Scott Fowler, and Roger Bennett on piano. I would like to say I have had the Great Honor and pleasure of meeting a lot of the singers of all the many groups out there, what a thrill its been. David Fjeldheim Des Plaines IL.

I grew up listening to the Cathedrals on the Rex Hubard program back in the 60's. They had the ability to harmonize like no other group, and tel me a better bass singer than George Younce? Not only could he fill the base position but he also had a good lead voice. When you add Glen Payne who doesn't know what it's like to sing out of key, you have two icons in Gosple music. Not only could they sing but they also knew how to entertain those who had come to listen to them. they are missed

I grew up listening to the Cathedrals in the 80s and my parents still have their records, 8 - tracks, cassettes, and CDs of their music. I have many of their albums on CD and listen to them often...espe c i a l l y when I need a word from God. My Favorite was George Younce and Kirk Talley. Absolute favorite song was Evergreen which I would lip sinc to in the mirror with my hairbrush. I also still have the songbook and poster they signed when we went to see them in Stow, Ohio in the early 80s.

George Younce what a singer and this is my favorite song from the Catherdrals

George is the absolute best!

In my humble opinion they have set the bar so high it will be a long time if ever that a better quartet is found.
Report as inappropriate
The best base voice that set the bar for all other base singers was the Big Chief frm the statesmen quartet. After him is Jd Sumner (Stamps quartet) . Of course i love George but, he's not exactly a base singer lol

i love george

This is my mothers favorite song. She loves the cathedrals, they are her favorite singers

Sorry wfpaco Fowler was and still is a Baritone. Great bass singer in George, in my opinion the greatest and no one in Gospel could present a song like Glen Payne.

From this group came Ernie Hasse and the Signature Sounds, Legacy Five, Greater Vision, Mark Trammell Quartet and The Tally Vocal Band.

Memories of the Cathedrals ringing through the house over the old cassette player and my dad singing along. It's almost as if George, Glen, Mark, Roger and Danny were family. So saddened by the losses of George, Roger and Glen, but I'll see them one day.
Report as inappropriate
Love the Cathedrals!! They were no doubt the best in Gospel music. In my personal opinion, the two groups that have taken George and Glen's mentoring the best are Legacy Five (Scott Fowler + Roger Bennett's group) and Mark Trammell Quartet (obviously Mark's group). Look at the way they present themselves and the music they sing. :)

Glenn Payne was a baritone and Scott Fowler was a lead.

Undoubtedly the greatest gospel quartet. Now let's support Ernie Hasse and Signature Sound. After all, George and Glen mentored Ernie.

They would frequently come to the Joyful Noise Dinner Theater in East Point Ga. and we did not miss one single show. The world loss two great singers when Glen and George died. They are greatly missed in the Gospel Quartet community.

Without a doubt, The Cathedrals are the best in this genre, even though the two originals have gone on to be with the Lord. What I like most about them is their excellent vocals, backed up with lives that match what they sing about!!!

One of the best.
