Gustav Mahler

July 7, 1860 - May 18, 1911
born in Kalischt, Czech Republic, composed during the Romantic period
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) was a composer and conductor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries whose career was centered largely in Vienna. A youthful supporter of Wagner and Bruckner, he absorbed aspects of their music in his semi-autobiographical works, adopting their adventurous harmonies and large-scale forms. Mahler's style is notable for its extreme emotions, from triumphant and joyous to sardonic and funereal moods. Between 1888 and his death, Mahler composed 10 symphonies (the last was left unfinished), and several song cycles, of which Kindertotenlieder, Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and the symphonic Das Lied von der Erde are the best known. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

I love how Mahler was an admirer of Wagner, when Wagner would not have liked Mahler due to him being Bohemian(Cze c h ) and being a Jew. That, and I feel that Mahler's temper might not have helped him either.

Knowing what I do about Gustav, Alma, and the tragic deaths of his children, I am eternally thankful Mahler was able to immerse himself in his own creative cosmos---it was this spiritual safe-haven which he could go to during summer vacations which ultimately brought us, enriched us, and transforms us to this day.

Has anybody noticed how 9th Symphonies loom large in the works of major symphonic composers? Viz. Beethoven's Ninth, Mahler's Ninth, and Shoshtakovit c h ' s Ninth. Ludwig didn't make it past his Ninth, much to his glory; both Gustav & Dmitri tried for a Tenth and neither just didn't seem to work out. I'm 72; can't wait for my ninth decade. Kick a**.

I have to say, given the magnitude of Mahler and his importance in the body of classical music, it's pathetic that his bio is about 1/10 of Lada Gaga or Justin Bieber and other auditory crap. I guess even Pandora follows the money. And we wonder why some of the great symphonies (in the US) are going out of business. So sad. Worthy of a Mahler's 11th symphony

Only in music do we achieve humanity. It is not impending death or family trama, but survival which Mahler offers to those who wait and listen as he speaks to us in his music. What a joy.

As a critic once said: Mahler's music is better than it sounds. For some it's an acquired taste. But what a taste. I love the comment below that M's music is an auditory feast. 1 suggestion: Put a day aside & listen to Symphonies 1-9 non-stop. It's actually 1 enormous symphony, with the 9th a fitting denouement to the orgasmic 8th... written by a man who (a) knew he was dying, (b) had recently lost a young, beloved daughter and (c) lost a philandering wife. Exquisite passion.

In the Pandora biography of Mahler, no mention is made of Leonard Bernstein the great NY Phil conductor who was also a huge Mahler proponent in 60's and 70's.

I mentioned Berg's Piano Sonata Op. 1 because the autumnal style and post-romanti c complexities remind me of the first movement of the Mahler's Ninth, one of my four favorite pieces by him (the other three being Kindertotenl i e d e r , Das Lied von der Erde and his Last Songs on Ruckert (''Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen'').
Report as inappropriate
I know what you mean, but I wouldn't call Webern, Berg, Hindemith, Bartok or Stravinsky simpler than Mahler. In fact all of those composers are more complex than he is contrapuntal l y . I consider Berg Mahler's heir, particularly in his Piano Sonata, op. 1 and his final work, the Violin Concerto, a kind of instrumental requiem dedicated to the daughter of Alma Mahler (''to the memory of an Angel''). Really, there's never been anyone like Mahler before or since.

I have never played in an orchestra because I was always in a wind band trombonist. However, if I ever get a chance to read through a Mahler symphony, I am sure I would get the lifetime experience of the orchestral genre. Amazing music!

I've not heard anything so magnificent as Mahler. I can't believe I'm just discovering him.

A Mahler symphony is a lot like a book. It's a story told from start to finish without a constant repitition of themes. In Beethoven, you hear a melody or phrase repeated throughout each movement. You don't get that with Mahler. It just rolls along telling the story without looking back.
