Christine Lavin

Christine Lavin emerged out of the crowded New York City songwriter scene of the '80s with a style that distinguished her from her peers. First, her songs were overwhelmingly concerned with contemporary romantic mores (that scary, uncertain world of "relationships," "commitments," and "biological clocks"). Second, while her takes on this subject could sometimes be sentimental or even maudlin, more often they were humorous. "If You Need Space, Go to Utah" was the first track on her second recording, a 1983 EP called Husbands and Wives. (Her first album, 1982's Absolutely Live, was out of print until 2000, when it was reissued on CD.) In 1984, Lavin self-released her first full-length studio album, Future Fossils, which included both her serious and comic numbers, notably "Damaged Goods" (what people start to feel like after enough failed relationships) and "Don't Ever Call Your Sweetheart by His Name" (how difficult it is to remember people's names after enough failed relationships).

In 1986, she signed to Rounder's Philo label, which issued Beau Woes and Other Problems of Modern Life, Another Woman's Man (a 1987 reissue of Husbands and Wives), Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind (1988), Attainable Love (1990), Compass (1991), and Live at the Cactus Cafe: What Was I Thinking? (1993). She moved to Shanachie Records in 1995, releasing Please Don't Make Me Too Happy and Shining My Flashlight on the Moon (1997). Then she set up her own record company, named after her website, christinelavin.com, and released One Wild Night in Concert (1998) and Getting in Touch with My Inner B**ch (2000) herself; that year, Rounder also released the Bellevue Years collection.

In 2002, Lavin moved yet again, releasing I Was in Love with a Difficult Man on Redwing's Blind Pig label. A year later, she signed with Appleseed to issue the holiday effort Runaway Christmas Tree. The concert album Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best followed just in time for Mother's Day in spring 2004. Lavin has also made a particular point of promoting the work of her contemporaries, notably on such collections as When October Goes, and with 1991's Buy Me Bring Me Take Me: Don't Mess My Hair!!!, she launched the part-time group Four B**chin' Babes. In 2005, Folkzinger, her 17th solo album (and third for Appleseed Records), was released, and in 2006 she compiled and commissioned songs about food for the compilation One Meat Ball, on which Lavin sang the recipe for French toast bread pudding on a track of the same name. Her own studio effort, Happydance of the Xenophobe, followed in 2007, with Cold Pizza for Breakfast arriving in 2009. ~ William Ruhlmann

I first came across Christine Lavin's music about 2000. I saw her Album at the Library Good thing he can't read my mind and thought (maybe out loud too) Wow! What a beautiful picture! Totally taken in by a CD Cover LOL. I really enjoy her songs, humor, and how she can score a direct hit with some of the seriousness of her other songs. As for the other side of the coin, on Youtube I look up this beautiful singer and to my surprise she had morphed into a little Old lady still with great voice!

I LOVE this woman. Twenty years after seeing her for the first time with The B**chin' Babes, I met her in Kennett Square at a very small venue called, The Flash. She was hanging out before the concert in the back of the room where she was knitting. We talked like old friends, as she talks to everyone. it was a very special evening and, yes, she still twirls at the end of the concert. And she is still as funny as ever.

Who puts out 17 solo albums?!? I don't know maybe there's tons of artists that do that and more, but this woman just keeps going with original music and lyrics, with incredibly sweet and universally identifiable themes. While I hadn't thought about her in a while and wondered if she still tours even, I was not surprised to find her on you tube writing new verses of her song What was I thinking? just this week about Cecil the Lion. Don't miss out on listening to this terrific folk artist!

I saw Christine Lavin in concert in Everett, Washington back in 1996. She made the very extraordinar y gesture of offering to personally paint the fingernails of anyone waiting in line to see the show! Not many artists are willing to make that kind of personal connection. (Next time I'm going to bring my own polish along in my purse, though--the selection was pretty limited!)

Saw her at the Palms Playhouse in Davis, California quite a number of years ago - she is so very very awesome. I don't know if she is still doing baton-twirli n g at the end of her shows or bringing knitting projects to work on with audience members before her shows, but that just gives you a taste of how incredibly approachable , hilarious, and humble Ms. Lavin is.

If you haven't heard Live at the Cactus Cafe and you're a Christine Lavin fan, you are in for a treat. DEFINITELY her best album, because of her interaction with the audience. I've been waiting for her to do another live album for years, but no luck. Everyone I've ever played it for has loved at least one song - and a bunch have gone on to be fans. Srsly - check it out.

I've loved her for years. Sure wish she would do a West Coast tour... She's not been this way for a long time.

She's one of my all time favorites. She puts so much of her fun personality in her music and lyrics. She's fabulous! I also love the Dakota song. Brings a tear to my eye every time. And the musical appology is hillarious as well. She's one artist that is better live than on a recorded studio CD.

Can Pandora add Hormonal Imbalance, an album by Four B**tchin Babes, including songs like Hot Flash, Honestly, Viagra in the Water with artists Christina Lavin, Sally Fingerett, Patti Larkin & Megan McDonough

I've been listening to her since I first heard "Never Call Your Sweetheart By His Name" many years back. My favorite song by far is "The Dakota" which makes me catch my breath everytime I hear it. It's a song about John Lennon and his murder. I just heard "Firehouse" for the first time and its a song about local firefighters who were killed at the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks. She's one of those rare artists who is extremely successfull moving back and forth between funny and to

I got to know her from a Four B**chin' Babes concert (Julie Gold version...). I saw another babes concert after that. I really like her stories -- kind of reminds me of a female Harry Chapin. She's one of my favorite female solo artists.

I have such a girlie crush on Christine. My husband thinks it's cute that I got my picture taken with her at a concert and put it in my scrapbook. I just love her!

No comments for this singular, crazy-fun artist? She's quite wonderful. Listen to her stories.
