Based in Milwaukee, Citizen King mix hip-hop, soul and punk in a style much like Fishbone (who they've toured with) on their 1995 debut album Brown Bag. Guitarist Kristian Riley, vocalist Matt Sims, pianist Dave Cooley and turntable expert Malcolm Michiles formed Citizen King in 1993 after their previous band Wild Kingdom broke up. Local praise for the group's live show caught the ear of Arrested Development'sSpeech, who produced several tracks on Brown Bag. After the five-song EP Count the Days and shows with Fishbone, Citizen King played at Austin's South by Southwest convention. Executives at the major-label subsidiary 510 were impressed, and signed the band; Count the Days followed in 1996, and they returned in 1999 with Mobile Estates. ~ John Bush, Rovi
Warner Bros. totally dropped the ball with CK. They barely put any money in promoting them. Grew up seeing them as Wild Kingdom and as CK. Saw them in Cincinnati and there was no opening band! Some employees from Bogart's opened up. Only about 50 people showed but they played their tails off. I kept yelling No Free Soup WK song, Malcolm was like um, no can't do that. Warner Bros. should've released more singles. Under the Influence would have been more popular than Better days.

I used to go see Wild Kingdom as a little middle school kid. I had to go th the all ages shows! I loved them! Ad then I went to Citizen King shows too. Love their work, great people and great band. Wish they'd made it bigger an wish they were still around! Of course these musicians are still doing interesting things, and some are still around in Milwaukee.
