City Boy

At a time when punk rock and new wave were sweeping the music charts, Birmingham, England-based quintet, City Boy, produced melodic, hook-laden, progressive rock tunes. Despite placing two songs, "5--7--0--5," and "The Day the Earth Caught Fire," the title track of their 1979 album, in the British Top Ten, the band failed to capitalize on their commercial success and disbanded in 1981. According to The Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock, City Boy is remembered for their "strong identification with progressive rock and funk-oriented tracks." The inspiration for City Boy was sparked in the early '60s when lead vocalists Steve Broughton and Lol Mason met in prep school. In 1964, Mason befriended 12-string guitarist and bongo player Max Thomas. Two years later, Broughton, Mason, and Thomas recorded an acoustic album. left school and began writing songs together. When Thomas left to attend Suffolk University shortly afterwards, he lost touch with Broughton and Mason. By the time they reestablished their relationship, in 1969, Thomas had suffered several nervous breakdowns and was confined to the psychiatric ward of a hospital. Broughton, Mason, and acoustic guitarist Chris would pick him up each evening to spend the night jamming together. As an acoustic group, "Back-in-the-Band," the musicians began playing semi-regularly in a folk club, The Cherry Trees. In 1973, the group, renamed City Boy, was signed by the Vertigo label with the stipulation that they add an electric guitarist (Mike Slamer) and a drummer (Roger Kent). Their debut album, Mark I, was released three years later. Their first single, "Hap-Ki-Do," reached number 32 on the British charts. Kent was replaced by Roy Ward in 1978, shortly before the band embarked on a four-month tour of the United States as opening act for Hall and Oates. Although they signed with Atlantic for U.S. and Canada distribution, the days of City Boy were practically over. Despite moving to New York State, the band began to splinter with the departure of Broughton and Chris. Shortly after releasing a single on their own City Boy label in 1982, the group disbanded. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi

When I first heard '5.7.0.5'. and 'Blue Monday' of an FM station in Spokane WA back in '79, I was immediately hooked. I dug through stacks of vinyl to find the all their earlier recordings.. City Boy, Young Men Gone West, Book Early.. love them all.. Dear Jean, Deadly Delicious, State Secrets.. so many favorites.
One of the most original and progressive bands of their era! Discovered them in late 70' and fell in love instantly! Although I have many "State Secrets must be My fav song. Anyone who doesn't appreciate these guy's talrent is very close minded musically!
anybody who went to see H&O and were treated with City Boy opening

I wish I been able to see this band live. Truly underrated and uber-talente d .
I have seen over 400 shows from bowie to kiss to zeppelin. City Boy opening up for Hall and Oates at the Santa Monica Civic is in my top 10 shows ever. Come on, most of their albums were produced by Mutt Lang. Also the great Mike Slamer on guitar, Holy crap.

Well, reading these comments I would say a couple of these people need to go back to nursery rhymes. I don't know what you have been listening to, but it sure isn't the City Boy I have listened to for about 40 years. I think you are just be too dull wited to live. I would list my favorite songs but there are too many to make that practical.

I found City Boy in the late seventies. They were absolutely the best thing going at the time. Starting with The eponymous City Boy through Book Early every album was solid. From conception through execution these guys had hooks and riffs which knocked my on my arse. While I was not in love with every single song, there were few tracks which were not extremely well executed. Then I got The Day the Earth Caught Fire, and Heads Are Rolling. What happened? Sounds like a cheap knock off of Queen.

Millionaire is a kickass song
Most likely the most under rated band in the world.I have the Vinyl and still listen to it .It still holds up,and takes me back to a better time.
F**K you guys, my dad was the bassist for this band and you guys don't know your heads from you're asses. Good job guys (City Boy) and i also bet you guys were never in a band (made one) hah dumbfuck wankers
Oh, they aren't horrible, but yeah, they are pretty bad. I actually went to see Hall and Oates in 77 when these guys were opening for them. Although I remember H&O's show very well (they had a fantastic band that year)I did'nt remember City Boy until this song came up on one if my stations. It is VERY unusual that I don't remember details about concerts, so that makes City Boy very un-memorable .
This band SUCKS
