Modest Mussorgsky

March 21, 1839 - March 28, 1881
born in Karevo, Pskov, Russia, composed during the Romantic period
Although not professionally trained as a composer, Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was crucial in developing a distinctly Russian musical style. His lack of formal instruction and his rejection of European models led him to create music of such startling originality that after his death, many of his works were "corrected" by more conventional composers. The difficulties of his personal life prevented him from composing full time, and he died young, leaving a small but hugely influential body of work. He is best known for the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, the tone poem Night on Bald Mountain, and the opera Boris Godunov. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

I remembered listening to this piece 45 years ago when I was 7 years ago and was amazed how powerful, beautiful, yet frightening this piece was.

Couldn't help but think of Modest Mouse when I read that name.
The two versions offered by Telarc are exemplary in depth and a fanatical attention to detail. *(Read the notes on printed literature w/disc) The other disc by Telarc, recorded later, not shown here but is equally robust in its wide soundstage and rhythm, micro and macro detail. Mussorgsky is brilliant and this recording by the BBC Philharmonic (albeit through my Sennheiser phones and MacBook Pro) is astonishingl y beautiful, different and rich. A shame Mussorgsky died so young.

It is great
This music was also used in the score to Disney's Sleeping Beauty . . .Truly epic music
Mussorgsky may have left a small body when he died, but it got smaller as the years went by.
Gopak is wonderful!

midnight at the thalia, sound track to fantasia, you can guess the rest.

Mussorgsky has opened the eyes of many striving composer as an example that you can open your mind to free thought and open feeling music. Have you noticed that there are no full composers in this era that can write all level or insterment lines for a FULL sound avaible to an instrument. I love to play his music as well as listen.
bgmakriswork
I learned to love this piece thru Fantasia...t i e d in with Ava Maria...move d me to tears as a child. Left an indelable make on my soul.

This composition is one of the very last, if not last, musical pieces in Disneys Fantasia.

what movie was this in?
Pictures at an Exhibition does what it says. Paints pictures with music. Why do my favorite artisans always end up being alocholics, manic depressants, etc? (think Mussorgsky, Vincent Van Gogh, Phil Ochs...) :-)

I really love this composer
my favorite classical peice. Mussorgsky makes these others com-POSERS look like chumps!
