Born in Helena, MT, Colin Meloy has fronted three bands, Happy Cactus, Tarkio, and the Decemberists. His first foray into solo work came in 2005 when he hit the road in support of the six-song EP Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey. He toured again the following year with fellow singer/songwriters Laura Veirs and Amy Annelle, where he hawked another self-released limited-edition EP of covers, this time from the canon of lauded British folk legend Shirley Collins. In 2008 Meloy released his first "official" solo album, Colin Meloy Sings Live! on the Kill Rock Stars label, followed by a tour (where he sold his third installment of self-made tribute albums, this time of soul legend Sam Cooke) with fellow Portland, OR, singer Laura Gibson. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
If you really listen to the time period he sings about, along with the sorrowful expression in regards to forgetting the dead, you can't help but feel the intentional mysticism.
I have to disagree with zoso. His voice is very unique and his lyrics are well thought out. While I do enjoy the Decemberists, I feel like the only reason I do is because of the combination of his voice with the vast number of instruments they use.

he's better with a band behind him than he is alone, with the decemberists the idea of sailor music is fitting and seemed to suit him, alone it seems like he is trying to hard. Love the guy to death his music is great but he wasn't meant to be a solo artist.
This is so funny. The song started and I was confused because I know and love the Decemberists but I didn't know their frontmant was Colin so I was like, "wait a minute, that sounds exactly like the Decemberists, this can't be right."
