Combustible Edison

What to do if you've been slogging away in the rock underground for a decade to slight critical acclaim without making any appreciable artistic or commercial headway? In the mold of David Johansen/Buster Poindexter, the band Christmas decided to retool themselves as lounge lizards. On their debut album, the Providence, RI, group played cocktail jazz, exotica, torch ballads, and B-movie spy/guitar themes. To complete their transformation, the band adopted ice cream-colored tuxedoes in their live performances; one member of the group adopted the pseudonym "the Millionaire," and former Christmas singer Liz Cox called herself "Miss Lily Banquette" as she crooned languid jazz-pop tunes. After debuting in 1994 with I, Swinger, Combustible Edison issued Schizophonic in 1996, followed two years later by The Impossible World. ~ Richie Unterberger

Lounge Ax in Chicago--the grooviest place in the 90's to check out a band like Com Edison. Saw them on my birthday, got to meet them after the show, get autographs-- b e s t birthday ever!

Encounter Lounge at LAX - the funky looking quadropod building in the middle of the LAX pickup/drop- o f f loop. On the 30 second elevator ride to reach the bar/restaura n t at the top, the elevator plays one of two short Combustible Edison clips from the Four Rooms soundtrack. That alone makes me love that place! Also, nice view and decent food in a manufactured retro-swanky environment.

Fantastic concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles...wh e n I was young and beautiful. The concert was standing room only and they mesmerized us with their lanky lounge music. Love love their sound...it's like they channel Martin Denny and Mancini...bu t have their own distinct groove.

Spy vs spy anyone?

Possibly one of the best bands to see live. We got snowed in in Cambridge in 1997 and they continued to play even after their gig ended. Awesome!
