The Cottars

Precocious Canadian Celtic quartet the Cottars formed in late 2000 on the Nova Scotian island of Cape Breton. Comprised of siblings Ciarán and Fiona MacGillivray and Jimmy and Roseanne MacKenzie, the small collective of 15- to 17-year-old multi-instrumentalists, singers, and step dancers burst onto the traditional music scene in 2001 with nary a glance back. They have shared the stage with and played for everyone from Altan and John McDermott to Wayne Gretzky and Senator Edward Kennedy. Renowned tenor McDermott signed the Cottars in 2002 to his Bunnygee label and released their debut, Made in Cape Breton, with the help of Warner Music Canada. On Fire! followed in 2004 and earned the group an East Coast Music Award in the Roots/Traditional Group Recording category. They inked a deal with Rounder the following year and released Forerunner. ~ James Christopher Monger

Loreena is of Canada..

Of course, Forerunner was the last album that included the MacKenzie siblings. Fiona and Ciarán reformed the group in late 2006, with fiddler Claire Pettit and guitarist Bruce Timmins. Feast was their first album after the switch.

Still a great sound though.

Lol never mind! It was Rankin Family that was Canadian, not Loreena!

@Rach A. They're not the only ones. There's also Natalie MacMaster. And I think I read somewhere that Loreena McKennitt was also Canadian. And of course Gaelic Storm is from California! They don't all have to be Irish or Scottish.

The Cottars are the best interpreters of Tom Waits' songs that I have heard. Their renditions of The Briar and the Rose Hold On and Georgia Lee (all Tom Waits songs) are all incredible. Beautiful voices and great arrangements . If you like Tom Waits' songwriting, you should give these tunes a listen.

To ajcecil64... . j u s t to let you know the history show that the gaelic language originated in ireland and was brought to Scotland,. However, it took on a slightly different dialect. The two main languages in scotland is gaelic and scots

Stephanie: Scotland's native tongue is Gaelic. Ireland's is Irish. They're from the same language tree but they're not the same language.

Me: Um, that's not quite right. The language tree is Gaelic. Scotland has Scots Gaelic and Ireland has Irish Gaelic. I'd call them more like dialects, kinda like all the different Chinese dialects.

I love this sound. There must be a Celtic gene that links me back to my ancestors, although all I know for sure is that the ones who got to the U.S. in the 1700s came from Wales. Nevertheless , my soul reacts to this music (in a good way).

There is a common misconceptio n with the language of the Isles. Scotland's native tongue is Gaelic. Ireland's is Irish. They're from the same language tree but they're not the same language. :)
That said, I love everything Celtic.

Why do people assume you have to be of Celtic descent to enjoy this type of music? I like this music, and I'm Polish/Germa n / S c a n d i n a v i a n .

I'm not even Irish and I love this music! It makes me feel light and happy :) Wish I knew Gaelic so I could understand what they're saying! But it isn't all that important for me to know Gaelic, the warmth and solace of music is conveyed in a universal language.

I saw this wonderful band in Charlottetow n , PEI opening for the Chieftains a few years ago. My group and I were blown away by the talent of The Cottars!! Come back!!

It's amazing what they've done. I knew Rosie back in elementary (er...primar y lol) school when I lived in Cape Breton for a short time. Her fiddling hasn't improved much since then, so imagine how great she was then. Its crazy to think someone I know is an internationa l star.
