Crack The Sky

Progressive rock group Crack the Sky was formed in the Ohio River Valley region in 1975 by frontman John Palumbo, guitarists Jim Griffiths and Rick Witkowski, bassist Joe Macre, and drummer Joey D'Amico. According to the website at www.crackthesky.com, the band was originally dubbed ArcAngel, building a loyal following on the Cleveland and Baltimore club circuits before signing to the Lifesong label to issue their self-titled debut LP, which earned critical acclaim for Palumbo's acerbic lyrics and the songs' complex structures and time changes. Commercial reward was minimal, however, and after completing Crack the Sky's second LP, 1976's Animal Notes, Palumbo exited to pursue a solo career. D'Amico assumed lead vocal duties on 1978's Safety in Numbers, with singer Gary Lee Chappell featured on the Live Sky release. Crack the Sky then disbanded, but in 1980 Palumbo, Witkowski, and keyboardist Vince DePaul briefly reformed the group to record the White Music album before again dissolving. Palumbo then formed another new lineup for a series of albums including Photoflamingo, World in Motion I, and Raw before reuniting with Witkowski, D'Amico, and DePaul for a series of 1986 live dates at the Baltimore club Hammerjacks and eventually a new 1989 studio LP, From the Greenhouse. Dog City followed in 1990, and Crack the Sky infrequently reunited throughout the decade to come. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Look pretty here comes yourself ...awesome band ...
I got turned onto crack the sky back in 1978.. Thought they rocked then. Even the old stuff sounds better than alot of the s**t that is coming out now. Rock on!!
One of the best underated 70's bands!!
Love Crack The Sky! Agreed, way ahead of their time..... should have been so much bigger than they were but those in the know get it, hidden gems for us!
Grew up in Baltimore, and have seen them at least 6 times. From the Greenhouse I believe is their best album.

They always claimed that Baltimore was Their second home. No one here mentions some of their best stuff like "Ice" and "she's a dancer". Great music.
Not all of the music I grew up with me, but it was great music in the 70's and it has stood the test of time. I've since moved from the Baltimore area, and now Nashville is getting an introduction . Spread the Crack!
Grew up listening to this band in the Rochester NY area in the 70's. They are still as awesome now as then.

They were WAY before there time!!!!
I fell for Crack the Sky because of Safety in Numbers, by far my favorite of all the Crack albums.
I am only fifteen and i have seen crack the sky five times between club 66, ramshead, powerplant, and the recher theater!! The ROCK!
Got the albums, Checked out the You Tube stuff, hope these guys will tour again. They havent played in Cleveland in years. :(
Great group - theyre still going! Been with them ever since Animal Notes. Agree, more cuts should be on here, including Palumbo's solo stuff, Cruel Shoes, and The Precious Brothers. Band website is http://www.c r a c k t h e s k y . c o m /
can we get some to the more current stuff? Pleaseeeeeee e e e

Saw them recently for a benefit in Balt. Still great band and a bunch of great guys.
Hot Razors in My Heart!!! I have loved this band and the other renditions of it all the way to Band of 1,000 names. Funny I didn't see Carey Zeiglers name anywhere in the biography I know he was late to the game (& a bit of trouble as I recall) but he is a great bass player.

Please add the rest of the discS. Almost 40 years of music in the buisness you only play from 2 cds. You are really missing out!!!!!!

It was a bridging of generations when I took my 15 year old son to see one of his "old man's" favorite bands. He absolutely loved Crack The Sky! And I peeled off 32 years and rocked like a 21 year old again..what a night at Power Plant. Need more discs..White music, Live Sky, Cut, and Machine too. Saw them at "The Hollywood Palace" in Catonsville back in day. Root Boy Slim and the Sex-Change band opened...we all booed him off the stage! Anybody else remember those days?

Surf City- here come the sharks.....C r a c k the Sky is playing Ramshead live in B'more in April. Its been many years, can't wait.
Terrific stuff!! Admittedly, I was not very familiar with them until recently. CTS deserves much more attention and recognition than they have been given.

Awesone band...I saw them in their hayday a couple times at Painter's Mill Music Theater in Owings Mills, MD before it burned down and at HammerJacks. I think they still play in Baltimore at the Recher theater once in a while. I felt fortunate to be in one of the cities where they were really popular. Living here, you would have never known they didn't have national recognition. Had they been with a better label, they could have been huge, which I'm sure was very frustrating.
where's "white music" ??, it's my favorite CTS!
Great group .... saw them 5 times. I think part of their problem in getting more recognition was their label and John being a bit hard headed. Kind of funny that he's a psychiatrist now, in the Philly area I do believe. I met him once in the infield at Pimlico, out with the family listening to the bands playing as the horses ran. Silly me lost his autograph ..... but did that with Gene Roddenberry' s too, DOH.

Amazing vocals.

Saw them at Hammerjacks back in the day. Check out Crack Attic, Ice is my favorite.

Saw CTS in Memphis in the late 70's. Was at the Ritz, a small place that brought in a lot of great acts. A great show! I recall they did "I am the Walrus" as the encore. We had a local college station that played them and a lot of other groups you'd never hear on commercial radio. I miss WLYX(FM89). It seems CTS still plays locally in the PA/MD area. Would love to see them again. Come to Atl, Ga. BTW, local radio sucks in Atl. Thanks to internet radio, qtherwise I'd still be listening to vinyl
These guys rented a hall in Wintersville and practiced there all summer so I got to see them all the time what a great time I think it was 1977
wow never new there were some many "crack heads" around met my best friend over some crack at the grand canyon R.I.P tim
The Live Sky tour in 79 was one of the most incredible live rock shows ever! One of the greatest prog rock bands of all time!
wow- i thought my small group of friends in central NJ were the only fans. There was a high school bathroom stall that mysteriously had the "Crack the Sky" lightning bolt logo way back in 1979!
phenomenal band, deserves WAY more airplay than they get. recently most of the original lineup returned and still kick a** after all these years. check out their last studio record, "the sale" and re-mastered "alive and kickin' a**"

Why isn't "from the Greenhouse" in the rotation? Its great album!
afinesod
these guys are absolutly amazing . Why dosnt some of their newer material ever rotate on pandora
Live Sky is a great album. Check out their version of "I am the Walrus" on that album. It's amazing.
why cant we hear the original crack the sky? How about spme 70 s**t?
Hard to believe these guys layed down track in '75. I think their sound is amazing and progressive.
Hay pandora; they are still recording. You may want to check out Ghost or Cut
There is no band sinular soo just play CTS
They were quite popular in upstate New York for awhile. I was fortunate to have actually attend one of their shows when JP came back as the leader/singe r . Still one of my all time favorite bands.
Yea, I really love their sound. I only wish our local bands played progressive rock.
mcspiceboy
Crack The Sky is one of those local "secret" bands. I don't know much about other localities they were popular in but in Baltimore late 70' to mid 80's they were more popular than some of the national bands. I'm almost glad they weren't exposed to the whole country because they were somehow "our" band. On the other hand they deserved more recognition than just the circles they traveled in.
Sounds awesome! Wish I could hear more.
good listening good dude good dude
