Crazy 8s

The Crazy 8's were one of the most hard-working and energetic American ska groups in the '80s; however, they broke up a few years before record labels probably would've finally seen their commercial potential. Formed by Todd Duncan (vocals) in Corvallis, OR, in 1984, the Crazy 8's released their debut album, Law & Order, on their own label, Redrum. The Crazy 8's gigged constantly in the Pacific Northwest, especially in Portland, OR, and Seattle, WA. "Johnny Q" and "Law & Order" began receiving massive airplay on college radio stations; however, the band's rollicking blend of ska, punk, and funk generated little interest from major labels. Two of the most popular ska revivalists, the Specials and the English Beat, had already fallen by the time the Crazy 8's joined the party. The group's second full-length, 1985's Nervous in Suburbia, further expanded the band's cult following. Nevertheless, throughout the '80s the Crazy 8's were never given the opportunity to transform their regional popularity into national stardom. In 1993, the Crazy 8's turned off the lights and closed the door. But after the Top 40 success of No Doubt introduced a new generation of listeners to ska in the mid-'90s, people started discovering their records. In the late '90s, the Crazy 8's played a number of farewell concerts and compiled their catchiest tracks on Still Crazy After All These Beers. ~ Michael Sutton

I remember winning the Law & Order cassette on a Boston college radio station giveaway, long before I lived in Oregon. Would have loved to see them live (though growing up with Bim Skala Bim and the Bosstones didn't suck). Thanks Pandora for refreshing my memory!

In 1984 I was the bouncer for them for quite a few nights in Ashland Oregon at Jasmin's Bistro and Sidewalk Cafe. Insisted my boss give me the original poster with Reagan gun-slinging missiles. Framed it. Now where did it go?

i Loved dancing to these guys! They used to practice down the street from my house....sta r t e d to catch any shows I could get in with out an ID. I was never interested in the drinking part, just the dancing part. I loved when they played the WOW Hall!

I graduated from H.S. in 1986 and we followed these guys hard. They were such great musicians and had such a sense of humor about their music it seemed.

I danced up front and center at so many shows the top of my head is in one of the audience shots inside one of the albums. Not only did they play on Star Search, I think I remember them on one of the late night TV shows as a guest.

they still play shows around the Portland area usually during the summer months. They are still just as much fun 25+ years later as they were back then. They have a facebook page that has all the info

Saw the 8s many times in Seattle - best club band ever. Still can't believe I didn't grab tickets to the 8-8-88 party when I had a chance!

Oh the hours, the sweat and beer I spent jammin to these guys! The write up is not accurate: The 8's won Star Search very early in their existence which gave them major label access that they shunned. Top 40 does not equal success.

great times with these guys during my college years. Some of the most amazing live performances I've ever seen.

The BEST band you've never heard of! (Reminds me of fantastic times as an undergraduat e at PSU in the 1980s.) If you like Oingo Boingo, Fishbone, and the English Beat, you'll probably like the Crazy 8s. By the way, it doesn't look like Pandora has all of the albums; you should look for other albums by the Crazy 8s: Nervous in Suburbia, Out of the Way, and Big Live Nut Pack. (I think that Big Live Nut Pack is being re-released on 08/08/08.)
