Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

The musical partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, with and without Neil Young, was not only one of the most successful touring and recording acts of the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s (with the colorful, contrasting nature of the members' characters and their connection to the political and cultural upheavals of the time), it was the only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles.

The group was a second marriage for all the participants when it came together in 1968: Crosby had been a member of the Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, and Stills had been part of Buffalo Springfield. The resulting trio, however, sounded like none of its predecessors and was characterized by a unique vocal blend and a musical approach that ranged from acoustic folk to melodic pop to hard rock. Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1969, was perfectly in tune with the times, and the group proved an instant hit. By the time of their first tour (which included the Woodstock festival), they had added Young, also a veteran of Buffalo Springfield, who maintained a solo career.

The first CSNY album, Déjà Vu, was a chart-topping hit in 1970, but the group split acrimoniously after a summer tour. Four Way Street, a live double album issued after the breakup, was another number one hit. In 1974, CSNY re-formed for a summer stadium tour without releasing a new record -- nevertheless, the compilation So Far became their third straight number one. Crosby, Stills & Nash re-formed without Young in 1977 for the album CSN, another giant hit. They followed with Daylight Again in 1982, but by then Crosby was in the throes of drug addiction and increasing legal problems. He was in jail in 1985-1986, but cleaned up and returned to action, with the result that CSNY reunited for only their second studio album, American Dream, in 1988.

CSN followed with Live It Up in 1990, and though that album was a commercial disappointment, the trio remained a popular live act; it embarked on a 25th anniversary tour in the summer of 1994 and released a new album, After the Storm. The trio again reunited with Young for 1999's Looking Forward, followed in 2000 by their CSNY2K tour. A DVD/CD set, CSN 2012, was filmed and recorded during a 2012 tour, and released that same year. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

glaughin. denial is not a river in Egypt. Open wide your eyes.
bobonrit, What? are you nutz?
Too bad CSN don't see that their idol Obama is just as bad as Nixon with the spying on citizens, having a corrupt, justice obstructing Attorney General and plans to open fire on citizens without a trial and conviction. If they were honest they would protest the left who are worse than the right was in the 60's.
Ohio my home.
really this was made in 99?

Disc 1 has a song about Jim Morrison and an amazing song by written arraigned sung and played by crosby's son that he wrote for his wife . Another musical genius destined for greatness in the archives of outstanding composers of our time.
If you like csny you should check out Crosby in his other project CPR with his biological son who has great talent the apple did NOT fall far from the tree. Look up "Live at the Willtern" disc2 even has a guest voice of phil Collins and Nash too!
Cost of freedom so sad it's about the many young men that lost their lives in Vietnam. This was dedicated to them.
Carry on!! Great song on a great album déjà vu.
Love the music, very tumultous period in history. Conservative s lost the culture wars during this period.

Got some of the lyrics wrong on Woodstock... f a r m e r s riding shotguns in the sky then they turned into butterflies? lol And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes riding shotgun in the sky. What a great song of the 60s. It's so disappointin g to me that so many of my generation have abdicated this dream for the petty tyranny and vapid materialism they fought so strongly then. Like Smashmouth said: What the hell happened?

Csn+y are all alone when it comes to music. They have a feel about them. Can't explain. Just in a leage of their own. Dig em!
Nothing without Neil
Those harmonies are simply deadly, timeless, brilliant... S t i l l s is a complete genious, as is Young, and the other 2 can sing their asses off.

Deja Vu was the first album I ever bought. I laid on floor under my parents stereo counsole all night listening to it over and over. I still have it playing at least 2-3 times a week even now.

Fantastic album. Among the very best of its era and still a personal favorite after all these years.
When you have genuis playing together, you have greatness.
I took my 15 year old son to see them in an audience full of mostly graying heads and when this song came on, one of my proudest moments as a parent was when he stood on his chair and sung all the words, fist pumping in the air. many people next to me nodded in approval and said I did a good job raising my boy! I was truly overcome with emotion sharing that music with the next generation.. . . .
For What Its Worth from Stills is still today an anthem for those who believe in a better world. I was 18 when CSN began their journey together sometimes with and sometimes without Young. They are honestly to this day one of the few groups who defined the era.
Note to vin: NO Cowgirl is from 1971, Farrah didn't hit the scene till 1976
saw them in consort last week and they sound the same there GREAT
I've said it before and I'll say it again, If you were there, no explanation is necessary, if you weren't, no explanation will do. The 60's were a crazy time and the music reflects all the love, hate, freedom, repression , black, white, north, south, long hair, short hair, establishmen t , hippie, war, peace, Nixon, McGovern, Eagles, Cowboys, We lived through it and changed the world.
Is it true cowgirl was written about Farah Fawcet?
